I had a very weird experience yesterday. Right after I left my neighborhood (0.65 mile into my run) a guy came up behind me on the sidewalk and instead of passing me, he paced me and struck up a convo. About running, how far I was going, what race I was training for, you live in this neighborhood? (that I just turned out of), oh so do you know (people that live right by us), our kids went to school with theirs, I live over in X neighborhood, I said I run through there sometimes, etc. etc. He stayed with me a turn or two past where his route was. The chat was mostly about running (he said he'd done NYCM a while back, we talked about a local 15k we've both done), but it was unusual to me to do that with someone you've never met before, including following them in a different direction than you planned. We parted ways at an intersection about a mile later.
Then a couple hours later when I was at about mile 15.5, I was on a rural road (admittedly in the direction of his hood) and he drove by me and yelled something like you've got this! - in an encouraging way but also a way much more enthusiastic than you would for a stranger.
Then a mile or two later, I went through a road on the edge of his hood. Not on purpose, but because it was on my planned route (a big 18 mile loop) and mathing is hard to adjust on the fly when you are 16+ miles into your run. As I was leaving his neighborhood to turn on to a state route, I saw him (in his car) AGAIN! and he waved.
Nothing he did was threatening, but it really weirded me out to see the same guy so many times. I need to talk to my neighbor and see if they can hopefully tell me yes, they have a super extroverted runner friend who fits the description. I checked Strava fly-by's, but nothing there.
It sucks that women have to be so vigilant and concerned.
Apart from that, I am sore and tired today, but I think the 18 went ok.
Susie, I would also find that odd and slightly unnerving too. Also annoying - running is my me time, I'm not looking to chat up strangers during an 18 mile run.
Fri: 3 mile run/2 mile walk. Was supposed to run 5, but my IT band had other ideas, so had to walk back. Sat: 20 mile run. This felt OK. IT band not the best and the last few miles were a struggle, but I got it done. Sun: Rest
BQ: Ditto sadlebred! It was HOT and I got out too late on Saturday. It was 81-86 during my run. Praying Chicago is cooler!
Susie - I wouldn’t love that either. There used to be a man who would join me (uninvited) on my runs when he would see me out. I like to run solo and listen to podcasts, so I hated it. He was older and likely harmless, but it annoyed me so much that I started running a different route to avoid him. If he does it again, tell him that running is your time to decompress and you prefer to run without distractions, like other people or people honking at you. Just you and your mace (ha!). Hopefully he gets the hint and leaves you alone.
Friday: nothing Saturday: nothing Sunday: half marathon - recap in Fall Marathon Randoms thread
BQ: today does. I needed a sweatshirt.
Susie,i'm pissed for you. read the room buddy - you don't start running with a random woman on the street. and i'm sure he would think "i'm friendly, I was just trying to be friendly" but no - he needed to put his needs of getting attention over yours of feeling safe. at best it makes him clueless, at worst he just doesn't care.
Susie I'd tell him my husband is meeting me just up the road to run with me. Thanks, but I need to get there to meet him.
I did mention that my husband meets me along my route to give me more water/nutrition/etc. (Generally true, although he wasn't meeting me that particular day due to kid sports.) I probably should've also mentioned he tracks my location w/ find my iPhone to facilitate that!

Susie My "husband" is always out there doing something if I am working out, and I'm meeting him. I think mentioning that someone is waiting on you is always a safe bet...hopefully this was just a nice person...but you never can be too careful.
Fri: nope Sat: I got up late so made it a dropback week and did 5 miles of running and walking. It was hot and I was grumpy. Sun: nope
BQ: it finally rained on Sunday and it's rained a little more on and off since then, which is good since we desperately needed it. It's still warmer than I'd like for fall but the temps are no longer within sniffing distance of 90 degrees. So there's that.
Follow up: my neighbor recognized the guy from my description, told me his name, and it seems like all is fine, it was just a very weird occurrence. I googled him and yes, he's run a bunch of local and semi-local marathons between about 2009-14, including NYCM which he mentioned, and he continues to run races around here up to about HM distance. He's in the 55-59 AG now, and his LinkedIn photo looks like I remember.
I definitely feel better having solved this mystery!
