My BFF and I will be in NYC in early December. We both see all the touring Broadway shows in our cities, so I’m looking for recommendations for any of the newer shows. The ones I’m considering are The Great Gatsby, The Notebook, Back to the Future, Once Upon a Mattress, or Water for Elephants. Can anyone provide a recommendation on any of these or something else if I’m missing a really good one from the list? Thanks!

Are you open to a play versus a musical? I saw Our Town in previews last weekend, and it was fabulous. I love Jim Parsons, and Zoey Deutch was amazing.

I saw Back to the Future on Broadway with 2 teenager in the spring and we loved the special effects. Good music, too. I would recommend it for a fun, upbeat show with the quality you only get in NYC. I also got the tickets 1/2 price at TKS (that morning), so I might like it more than I would if I thought I overpaid.
I don’t know if you plan to go to TKS or not but you can get a rough idea of what’s available by checking online. It changes everyday but not by much. I think Water for Elephants was also available that day.

We really enjoyed The Great Gatsby and Water for Elephants. Gatsby has a phenomenal cast and is just a really fantastic big-Broadway spectacle. It’s an adaptation of the novel, so don’t expect it to have every nuance of the actual text. Water for Elephants has amazing acrobatics and a good story, impressively less-is-more on the sets.

OMG I just re-read Our Town after reading the book Tom Lake, where the play features heavily and my lasting impression of the book was that I wanted to audition for a local production of Our Town. I didn't realize there was a current version of the play being performed in NY. I might need to plan a trip to see this!

That was my first thought, too, Tom Lake!
It's Six still playing? Hamilton? I am a bandwagon jumper even it comes to stage productions so whatever is popular I would lean towards.
We saw Hadestown, Outsiders, and Great Gatsby on Broadway this year. We thought Outsiders and Hadestown were AMAZING! Gatsby was great, but not as "blow your mind" great as the other 2.

I'm taking my son in early November and he's got his heart set on Death Becomes Her. It's in previews at the time, so I wouldn't expect it to tour for a bit, which makes it a good choice for you too.
He's also interested in Hells Kitchen which is not touring and since the planned run is through 2025, I wouldn't expect the tour to start before 2026.
If I wasn't with him, I'd be bending over backwards to see Oh, Mary, but that might not still be running when you get there.
However, Gypsy is not open while we're there but will be when you are. With Audra McDonald! This would be incredible.
Also, I ADORE James Monroe Iglehart so I'd love to see A Wonderful World.
As for your list: The Great Gatsby - I love Sam Pauly (who is playing Jordan) and you can't go wrong with Jeremy Jordan.
The Notebook - I'm in San Diego, and this came from here, and the buzz wasn't anything that would have me rushing to see it.
Back to the Future - if you're avoiding things you'll see locally soon, skip this. If it's not in your current season (it's in ours) it will probably be in next year's.
Once Upon a Mattress - Sutton Foster playing an iconic Carol Burnett role? I'm sure this will tour soon, but not with her. Worth it to see her perform.
Water for Elephants - this looks great, and I pushed it for my kid, but he's more interested in the two I mentioned above.
I’m pretty sure Once Upon A Mattress closes its run at the end of November.
Depending on when you’re there, The Notebook is closing its run sometime in December.
I go to NYC 3-4x a year and make seeing shows on Broadway my priority. I loved Suffs when I saw it in June, so that’s a great option someone recommended.
I also love &Juliet and find it so fun with the music - I’ve seen it twice on Broadway.
From your list, I’d do Water For Elephants or Great Gatsby. I’m there in mid-December and I’m considering Cabaret or Hadestown, as I have yet to see either of those.

Hadestown is fantastic live, so I imagine on Broadway would be that much better.
After the Tony’s, I really wanted to see Eddie Redmayne in Caberet, but I think Adam Lambert may even be a better fit.

Sutton Foster's playing in Once Upon a Mattress at the Ahmanson in LA from Dec 10- Jan 5th. Tickets went on sale to the public two days ago.

Well now I may end up seeing Elf since it is coming back for a limited run for eight weeks at the holidays and I think my kids would really love that…

It’s a good thing you’re able to go often, because there’s no way I’d pass up Hadestown or Cabaret for Elf, lol!
Well I did get tickets to Elf but just now snagged tickets to All In, which opens a few days before we get there. No idea what it's about, but Hank Azaria, Fred Armisen, John Mulaney, and Renée Elise Goldsberry in a comedy written by an SNL guy and produced by Lorne Michels makes it worth the gamble. So I at least get that! And the Nutcracker, which I'm excited about.
