I’m mostly a lurker here, and only post now and then. But- I am a big weather geek, and this Hurricane is freaking me out. It is a massive storm, and I pray for everyone who is in its path. We are several states away from where it will make landfall, and are expecting flash flooding and tropical storm force winds all the way up to here. Please be safe, and take all the necessary precautions you can.
I'm a bit nervous, not for me as I am on the upper East Coast but my college DD. She is in Western Carolina south of Asheville and flooding is being predicted. A bunch of them were supposed to go to Gatlinburg (pre planned) but that is off the table (thank goodness). It will be bad, I hope everyone is taking all precaustions they can.
I am actually in Charlotte but have a house in western NC. I have not heard from my sister since 7 am though. I know the roads leading to her neighborhood are flooded and she doesn't have power. She is in Hendersonville. Her house is higher but she has a big hill behind it so hope there was no mudslide. No power at our mountain house so can't see our cameras. It is heavily wooded though so concerning. It is very bad from what I see. So many trees down, roads closed, flooding. It is going to take a long, long time to clean up.
ETA just saw some photos on facebook of my sisters neighborhood. The lower part of the circle is covered with water. Homes are flooded.

I’m glad you’re ok and I hope you hear from your sister soon. It sounds like communication is completely down in the area.
My sister lives in Boone and it’s a mess there. Her community is surrounded by a river and all 3 wooden bridges that gave access to her area have washed away. So she/her neighbors are totally stuck and won’t be able to get supplies, go to work, whatever until a bridge is rebuilt. Luckily her house is ok although they don’t have power. Downtown Boone looks totally flooded from what I can tell
This storm has caused SO much damage over such a large part of the US. I can’t believe videos I’m seeing:((. So many have lost everything. We stayed up until 1:30 watching last night. Horrible.
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus

Because Helene took a slightly eastern track, the upstate of SC and Western NC was hammered with wind and rain. WNC has too many mudslides and closed roads to count in every county. Cell service is out in most places. A huge shelter is set up at the WNC Agricultural Center (big facility). The photos on social media and traditional media are heartbreaking.
I texted with my sibling, and they said they'd never seen so many trees down including on the interstate. Power was out everywhere but came back on for them this evening. Their house was fine thankfully.

East TN was hit hard with flooding. There was a hospital that took a hard hit. They had patients on the roof and being evacuated by helicopter. It’s unreal how far inland is being impacted.
Lots of love to everyone dealing with this tragedy

I agree, its unfathomable really. Almost the entire west coast of Florida was flooded and/or buried in sand. And then I started seeing the Asheville and surrounding area and it just keeps going. Its sad that people look at this and still don't believe in climate change.

I saw that!!! Reminiscent of Katrina.
I am afraid this might be worse than Katrina. The rain is still coming in middle TN. I cannot fathom how much water is being poured into these small lakes and streams. I am certain clean up will never be complete. The damage is far too severe.

I pray the loss of life won't be!! There are still areas that people never came back to.
Helene just took out such a huge area:( it's unfathomable the amount of states catastrophically impacted.

I’m in upstate South Carolina. We are wrapping up day 2 of no power. Trees and lines are down everywhere. Schools closed through Tuesday at the earliest. Thankfully my house didn’t get damaged.
The videos I'm seeing are just horrifying. I am thinking of our posters and all of the people impacted by this. I am seeing a lot of "this is worse than Katrina" and I can't even fathom that.
Also terrifying how far from the coast has been impacted. It's definitely making me reconsider our disaster preparedness, as it should for a lot of people.

Early reports are not good. At least 30 missing and presumed dead. The confirmed number of deaths is unknown. This is just from TN.
ETA - 73 missing in one county. I’m so sick over this

We've spent a lot of time in the mountains of NC and seeing the pictures of landscapes transformed is staggering. There are so many towns where there is only one or two roads in...Some are now only accessible by air.
My father grew up in Boone. My grandparents lived there until they passed. Still have an aunt and uncle there and at least one cousin. Unfortunately, because of how horrible my parents divorce was, I have very little contact with any of my extended family. And I feel so helpless right now. But I hope they are safe.
I’m in WNC, about 20 miles west of Asheville. It’s horrible. I can’t even begin to describe it. We kept power by some miracle but upwards of 75% of residents lost power and the majority still don’t have it back. There is still little to no cell coverage- including messages and calls so we were all under a rock for a while. We are getting internet by sitting outside best buy. They must have starlink or something.
Very little gas and groceries. So many impassable roads. It’s going to take years to recover.
