In the teacher taking the laptop thread someone mentioned GoGuardian. DS’s school has this enabled for the school issued laptops and they have offered the parent app as well. From my understanding the school turns on the GoGuardian app after school and then for kids who stay on campus and are using their laptops, they are restricted from accessing sites like YouTube. The school has offered a parent app and I’m thinking of taking them up on it. Would this mean that I could turn off certain sites and apps during homework time so DS wouldn’t get distracted, and then be able to turn access back on when he needed it or when homework was over?
I was the one who mentioned it, but we haven't had to use any sort of nanny software at home. Sorry I can't be of nay more help there.
In our case even appropriate sites would be a distraction. V was supposed to write a letter to scientists and he will just sit and read about what the scientists do.
ny96, I am not sure. It might be something you have to use to learn the finer details and ins and out.
In theory, Go Guardian can view what is seen on the laptop and close tabs. This is how the teachers use it at our school. This is in addition to other software where they block items on the computers as a whole inside and outside of school.
My kids told me that You Tube is finally blocked on school computers. I've only been asking this for about 3 years.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

We have the same problem, sometimes it’s YouTube, but sometimes it’s teaching himself Japanese, or reading about something semi related to his assignment, but not completely. I’m hoping that like Apple filters I can specify a few websites he can use like Google Classroom, and block all others until he finishes his work.

My crank take is that this is why first drafts of everything should be written on paper. Unfortunately V doesn't like to write by hand for various reasons. Sigh.

Go guardian works in 2 ways.
1. You see everything they do in real time.
2. You create a "scene" and only allow what sites they visit.
Both allow you to create time limits.
I find it very easy to use in the classroom. Just takes a little to play around with.

In this case you could set up a new scene each time the internet is accessed. You could have 1 general one and then add/removes sites when needed.
So always allow Google classroom and only allow YouTube per assignment. It would take management on your end to preview each assignment but it is possible.
