We are moving soon. The new house has lvp in all non-bedroom spaces. I had zero plans to purchase any rugs but then saw the other post. Can you explain the reasons to have rugs? Is there a real benefit to them, or is it just personal preference really?

Personal preference. We have all hardwoods in our row house and apartment and no rugs. We have lots of colorful artwork and other things on the walls and around the house for decoration/aesthetics.
Personal preference. I feel like with a lot of hard surfaces, especially with an open floor plan, it can get loud and echoey. Area rugs can also help define one space from another. They feel softer and warmer on my feet than a cold hard floor, and are nicer if you ever have anyone sitting on the floor.
But if you have anyone sensitive to allergens or dust, you probably want to avoid them.
For me it’s aesthetics and it keeps the floor warmer. I don’t put rugs down in high traffic areas because it’s a pain to constantly clean them/under them.
Pure aesthetics. They anchor a room and help define the space. We also added stair runners for safety (and ease for the dog). The kids have area rugs in their room for soundproofing ( they are on the 3rd floor above our bedroom in a 1905 house without great soundproofing and my 17 year old is a LOUD walker lol)
It defines the space, helps add color, keeps our feet warmer, and helps finish a space. I pull up the area rugs to clean and the room always looks naked to me.
Various reasons mentioned above, but also most apartments I’ve lived in the lease has specified that you have to cover X% of the floor with rugs. I assume it’s for noise and/or to protect the floor.
Most tenants clearly don’t comply. I wish our upstairs neighbors would since they’re loud walkers and often come home late, drunk, wearing high heels inside and dropping shit.
I have all hard surfaces in my house. I never had an area rug....until I got LVP in the den. The echo compared to the previous carpet was terrible. I put down a large area rug to help with sound since the main tv is in there. I do like the look of it, too, in the den.
For us it's area definition as our house is an open floor plan. Also, when we moved here 4 years ago our DS played on the floor 98% of his waking hours so he played mostly on the rugs.
ETA: We have 3 area rugs. One smaller one by the front door, one in the game room and one in the living room. The last two are 8x10 rugs.
Yep, agree with others - aesthetics (they’re a form of decor) and comfort. We have wall to wall carpet upstairs (it feels cozier to me in bedrooms) and a couple years ago we replaced our downstairs slate with LVP. We have a rug under our kitchen table, one in the kids play area, one in the living/family room, and a runner in the hallway.

For us it’s aesthetics and temperature control. We have radiant heat throughout our whole house (ranch house, slab foundation) and find that it just gets too warm if we don’t have rugs to absorb some of that heat coming up from the floor. We’re in MA and keep the thermostat set at 65 all winter and it still feels warm in the house.
