Some of you may remember that my health has been terrible for years. Rare neuromuscular autoimmune. Lots of medicines, as many as 40 pills a day at one point. Lots of treatments. Dozens of hospitalizations. Dislocated shoulder and torn ACL because my sense of balance is off and I fall now. Insert fear of falling. More tests than I could ever count. Hospitals, specialists, surgeries, hair loss, ports, infusions, anxiety, infections, rejections, depression, ICUs and ventilators.
And wouldn’t you know it, it’s the 70 lb weight gain that has been the hardest on me. This year I made a commitment to myself that “my health was more than just my weight.” I had a surgery in August 2023, and with that operation about 30% of people go into remission for life. So basically, I just had to chill. Do nothing but rest and allow my body to recover and hopefully, very slowly come down off the high level of steroids (that had caused the weight gain, Type 2 Diabetes, and countless gall bladder/liver/kidney issues.) I started the year at 30 mgs/day with the hope of getting under 10 by the end of the year.
So on Sept 1, my dose was officially at 9mgs, and my doctors told me I could start to go for walks again. So on the 1st I did a 0.94 mile walk. Then the next day I did almost 2. And I made it my goal to just try to get 10,000 steps in a day and try to shoot for 100 miles for the month. Well, I got to 3 miles a day pretty quickly. And then decided to go to 4. With 3 days left in the month, I haven’t missed a day, and I’m 5.5 miles from my 100 mile goal.
It feels so good! And I’m so proud of myself. My fear of falling is pretty legit, so this has helped me with that. I’ve explored so many trails in the area that I never even knew existed and I’ve lived here for 14 years!
I’m still about 6 month out from being considered “in remission” but I think I can get there! Thanks for letting me share

Wow! I hope you get thru the next 6 months to official remission with no further complications. You are kicking butt with the walking. Hope all of this is helping your mood as well.
Idk where you live, but will it get cold/icy in a few months? If so, make a plan now so you can keep this momentum going! I know I definitely need to do that.

I’m glad you’re feeling better. And your post is very inspiring. I’ve been thinking about actively trying for 10,000 steps a day but always have a reason to put it off. I’m going to start tomorrow.
