“The United States has indications that Iran is preparing to imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel,” a full statement reads.
“We are actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack. A direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran,” it continued.
I'm also very curious about what strings the U.S. is pulling in all of this. As I've said before, we are not a benevolent, altruistic country. We don't get involved in world conflicts unless we are protecting our interests or feel we can influence outcomes to benefit us. I feel like the Middle East is this millennium's Latin America as far as U.S. influence/intrusion goes.
I'm as cynical about the role of the US in foreign affairs as the next person, but I can see a descalation goal in sharing this piece of intelligence widely. It takes away the element of surprise. Also, if there's enough outcry, Iran may reconsider.
Iran has previously attacked and things have been getting hotter between all the actors there. This feels less like "oh for sure there's WMD" to me.

I’m not being cynical. I’m being realistic and there is historical basis for the US’s actions in foreign affairs.
Why would Iran reconsider? They’ve already launched an attacked. It’s 8:30 PM in Israel. We’re late to the news.

That's sort of what i was thinking too.
I also wonder if this is similar to recent military activity in the middle east...it's very telegraphed, so all sides know what's going to happen, the damages are mostly strategic and minimized, and then the response is appropriately measured. We can only watch and see at this point. It was NOT enough to deter the attack.

When I wrote that, confirmation that they had launched their attack was not yet widely available. ETA: or at least I hadn't seen it yet. I was hoping that somehow it wouldn't happen and then there wouldn't be retaliation and escalation and and and.
And I didn't mean it's only cynical and not realistic to presume US entanglement in foreign affairs--that's very realistic. I was referring only to the (then only) "indications" that Iran may launch a missile.
My stupid cousin just moved to Israel. I hate everything about it, I have no idea what his reasoning, if it’s a”he wants to be martyr thing” or what. He is an addict and got clean, but jumped super into his Jewish religion.
So now Israel is engaged in war activities with Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Iran..... has threatened Egypt and others.
With the backing of the US.
Huh.
The people in those countries( screw the governing bodies) deserve to live in peace and have governments that work towards that. Jewish holidays are starting. It's been almost a year of a humanitarian crisis. Too many people have died. Too many families shattered. Too many people further filled with hate.

I have been wondering how you are. Especially with the kamala of it all. I can’t imagine how torn you are but I hope you are well. From the river to the sea.
laladypoet Thanks. I'm just baffled and heartbroken daily by the apparent disregard for human life, clear racism, and inability of anyone to have a backbone and stop Netanyahu from being a psychopath ( not to mention the regimes like Hamas hell bent on their agendas).
I was going to vote democratic for the greater good of our nation but I don't think I can do so anymore. Kamala has said too many inexcusable things and her continued claims that Israel has a right to defend itself, when this is not self defense are disgusting.
I can't vote for someone who seems to not give two shits about helping kill my family and friends, murdering Palestinian babies, demolishing Gaza in its entirely, and perpetuating hate.
I don't think I will cast a vote for president. I know that people will judge me for that and if Trump wins, they will blame people like me, but my conscience will not allow me to cast a vote that supports the destruction of Palestine and the murder of its people.

if anyone judges you, they suck. no one could possibly understand what you're going through. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.
