We went to Jordan's and tried a bunch. We settled on a brand I never heard of. Definitely go and have one of their techs help you, they are really great.

We have a Bear mattress. Definitely on the firmer side. I think it's the original model (all memory foam). DH picked it out -- he has back issues and thought it was a good choice for that. It's less than $1K, so well within your budget.
It took me awhile to adjust, it is definitely not as cushy as our previous bed -- it has a slightly cushy give in the first few inches, but you don't sink way in. But we've been sleeping on our previous bed in the guest room due to renovation work, and I miss the support of the firm bed.
My kids had very firm twin mattresses for their first beds and the Bear is not *that* firm, and way more comfortable.

We got a new mattress 3 years ago, and I really wish we had gotten a tempurpedic with an adjustable base. I've had neck problems the past year, and I think being able to raise the bed instead of sleeping propped up with pillows would really help. Plus, dh and I are very different in our sleep preferences, so I would have wanted one that you could adjust each side's firmness separately.
We did go to a mattress store and try out a bunch, and we bought the one recommended to us based on our size and firmness wants (it's a sealy, I forget the model, but it's was like a step down from their most high-end, which had a cooling feature ours doesn't but that was the only difference and dh didn't want that). It's been fine, but I do think we'll get a tempurpedic at some point in the near future.
We just did an adjustable split king…and I’m forgetting the company but one of the cheaper online ones. We’re loving that it’s customized. DH inclines it to help with snoring and after I had surgery it was awesome.
We just upgraded from a regular queen coil mattress to an adjustable king size Tempurpedic earlier this year. I am absolutely in love with it, but it was more than $2k.
Sleeping with our heads slightly elevated has almost completely stopped my husband snoring.
Caspar. Costco. I can’t remember the specific one but I looked for someone two months ago and it was a different one than was available in store. I literally love this bed so much I never want to leave it
We got an all memory foam Casper and it was way too soft. We ended up returning it and then went to several mattress stores and laid on a lot of different mattresses. We ended up with a firm hybrid from IKEA. We had previously had an IKEA mattress for about 10 years. We're really happy with what we ended up with.
So I guess my recommendation is to take the time to go try out a bunch because I think it's impossible for a bunch of internet strangers to tell you what will be best for you.
