I can't believe I'm starting a fashion thread 🥴 but I am out of my depth. I'm going to a wedding this weekend that is cocktail attire but also outdoors. I bought this dress:
It's longer on me than it is on the model - more right at my knees instead of just above. I'm going to add a belt to dress it up a little bit.
What I'm stuck on is the shoes. Would ankle boots look silly? Because I don't like the way chunky heels look on pumps. I'm not a huge fan of wedge heels either, but if y'all think boots aren't a good idea that's my next choice.
I'd probably put the dress on and try whatever shoe options I have at home. Pick whatever you think works best. It's a black dress - there are going to be many shoe options that work with it.

This. I was at an outdoor wedding this weekend and they told people not to wear heels. My friend wore sambas (adidas sneakers) with her black dress. I wore a leather skirt and boots. I was at another outdoor wedding this summer and I wore "dressier" sneakers with a cute green dress. Definitely wear something you’re comfortable in, no one is going to care and if they do, they’re immature.

Is your aesthetic Courtney Love in the 90s? Because if not you do not want to wear any class of boots with that dress.
The dress is very pretty.
Eta Feminine/evening flats are just fine, but not too embellished so as not to compete with the dress. A kitten heel would work well, too, in peau de soie or similar.
I have a variation of that dress, I wear it with heels or wedge sandals. Ankle boots with short dresses/skirts can be tricky .
I also don't love chunky heels but they are in style, I actually found a cute pair for a wedding last year (of course no longer in stock). They were definitely more comfortable, I think they can be cute if you go with a higher heel.

This! My motto is that no one cares what wedding guests wear. As long as you're in the right ballpark (so like, not wearing sweatpants to a formal wedding), no one is really going to notice what you're wearing. Everyone is focused on the couple getting married, and catching up with family/friends. I couldn't tell you what shoes anyone was wearing at literally any wedding I've ever been to. Wear the shoes that you like the most!
Some kind of cute dressy heels would look awesome. That said, how cold is outdoors? I mean, if you need to do it to be comfortable, you could always wear tights and some kind of black ankle boot. I also think ypu would need some kind of wrap with all of that lace. But maybe it’s outdoors like outdoors somewhere nice and warm and then all of that is irrelevant

When did you start speaking fancy?
You knuckleheads need some guidance.
Also, that dress is lace plus a fringe hem, Please Do Not throw on a belt.
Look through the reviews with photos. There are a few with ankle boots, and couple with cowboy boots. I'm not at all qualified to give fashion advice, but it would be a no from me, dawg.
I understand that you don't want a thin heel that will sink into the grass, so I think you are going to need a flat, chunky heel or wedge (in any color) for this one.
Pretty dress! No boots, and no belt. It’s a lace dress; it doesn’t need any more dressing up. And boots would dress it down. The dresses pictured with boots in the listing work because those dresses aren’t black. That wouldn’t work with a LBD. And especially not if you want to dress it up.
Is the shoe issue that you’ll be on grass all night? If so, then a wedge heel is your best bet. Since you don’t really like them, go as cheap as you can since they probably won’t be worn again much, if at all. Plain black is fine, or a metallic would be cute too. I personally wouldn’t go with a flat because I’m short, but if you do, look for something dressier looking than a plain leather ballet flat.
But will you really be on grass all night? Most outdoor weddings I’ve been to have a patio or tent with a hard floor for the reception. If it’s just for the ceremony, I would just wear whatever shoe I wanted and walk on the front of my feet to my seat and back. Or get a pair of those heel covers and take them off when you’re off the grass.
And if shoe issue is because you think you’ll get chilly, I’d still wear a shoe and bring a wrap. And if it gets really cold, leave or drink more. Lol.

I live in jeans, t-shirts, and sweaters/hoodies. I have zero aesthetic 😁
We're only attending the ceremony, so I'm not worried about getting cold but I do know I don't want super dressy heels. I'm going to look for some nice flats that I can repurpose for other things.
Also, even though I didn't ask about the belt, thank you for telling me not to wear one. I'm stupid nervous about this and over thinking everything. Which is really not good since I have no fashion sense 😅
Where are you going to be? Will this be on a lawn, in a forrest, beach, mountain top? Or a paved courtyard of a fancy building? Terrain matters when choosing shoes.
(I agree that other guests aren’t going to be focused on your shoes, so trying it with whatever you have in your closet and picking your best option is fine).
Oh well that kinda changes things. To attend just a short ceremony, I wouldn’t buy anything. I’d just pick a decent dress or even dressy pants outfit from my closet and put heel protectors on a pair of my own shoes. Unless they specifically asked people not to wear heels, in which case I’d buy a pair of flats. It’s good to have a pair of flats anyway, and for just a daytime ceremony, they can be more plain. And you really don’t need to wear a lacy LBD for a daytime ceremony. Unless you want to, then go for it.

based on pics from the venue website, it looks like it will be on a lawn.

then pick something that isn’t going to sink into/ get stuck in a soft lawn.

Is a 5pm ceremony considered daytime? I just saw cocktail attire on the invite and googled from there. I'd really prefer to just wear something I already have, but the few nice things I have don't fit 🙁
...now I'm wondering if I should return the dress and look for a nice pants/blouse combo.
I really don't care what the other guests think. I just want to look nice/put-together.
I’m not someone who buys things as single use (even my wedding dress came from a consignment store because of a lucky find). But it’s okay to buy something for an event if nothing you currently have works. Just because this will be the first time you wear it doesn’t mean you can’t also wear it for the next event or when you go out to a nice dinner.

The dress is fine for 5 pm. It would be fine for 2 pm if you wanted it to be. And in this case, a nice blouse and pants would also be fine. You have more leeway since you aren’t staying for the reception. Since you’re buying something no matter what, get what you like and that makes you feel comfortable and put together.

What you had decided on upthread (this dress with nice flats) is perfect for the event. You will look fabulous!
