DD2 got her Covid vaccine on Sunday afternoon. We scheduled for Pfizer, but long story short CVS sucks and she ended up with Moderna, which none of my kids have had before.
That night she spiked a 102 fever and she's been sick since then. Super high fever, lethargic, developed a mild cough, threw up yesterday. Monday was a holiday, but she's missed 2 days of school so far. So she's been sick for almost 4 days now. Is this normal for a reaction for the Moderna vaccine? The reason we choose to vaccinate is to avoid getting sick/missing school so I'm pretty annoyed about it. She didn't seem sick/had no symptoms before the shot.
DD1 got Pfizer the same day and had no side effects other than a sore arm.

The vast majority of people who get the Covid vaccine, including Moderna do not get a 102 temperature, vomiting, coughing, etc. So no, (thankfully) that is not common. Did she pick up a virus? I’ve never seen cough as a vaccine side effect. So sorry she’s sick and hope she feels better soon. Poor thing!
Possibly just an unfortunate coincidence. Me and my kids are all battling a bad stomach bug right now. My sister and her family were all sick last week.
I would say no, not the norm for Moderna. My kids have both had Moderna, DS x3 and DD x1 or x2, I can't remember.
DD definitely felt poorly after Moderna last year. Poor thing got her passport pic taken the next day, and now her post-vax slump is enshrined for the next 6 or so years before the passport expires. But it was definitely not a 102 temp (not even a clinical fever that I remember), and symptoms were limited to malaise, chills, aches, fatigue, and maybe an elevated temp. No GI issues. She was fine the following day. DS has never had significant vax side effects from Moderna.
I've had side effects with Moderna myself, but mine were also not as long lasting or as severe as you describe. No GI, and over within 24h.
noodleoo, what you're describing sounds more like unfortunate timing with a virus of some kind.
Ok, thanks all. I guess it was just a bad coincidence! Now my question is, will the vaccine still take if she was sick when she got it?
Sure. Think of all the combined vaccines kids already take. TDaP for one, MMR for another... and how many adults (ETA and kids) get the flu & covid vaccines on the same day. Not really any different.
Minus the super high fever, my daughter has been sick with all of that since Friday and hasn't had any recent vaccines. She's had a fever on and off. I vote random virus.
