I hear Wamego Kansas has a Wizard of Oz themed section of town. Is this something that would be worth making a trip to see for an Oz fan? If so I assume it would be a 1/2 day or maybe a day thing at the most - is there anything else near-ish that is worth seeing/doing?
I know Kansas isn’t known for its tourism but sometimes states have hidden gems.
I don't know much about it, but I do know that it's a fairly short drive from Manhattan, where K State is located, and a family member took her kids while visiting there and said it was fine. She was deliberately looking for something else to add to a football game trip, so take that into consideration.
The museum will take an hour at most. There's an "Oz" winery next door, but otherwise, not much else to do in Wamego.
If you like university towns, Manhattan (Kansas State) is about 30 minutes west, and Lawrence (University of Kansas) is about 90 minutes east. I think Lawrence has a more "university town" feel. KU is more of the "ivory tower" university whereas KState is the land-grant university and has more agriculture, animal science, etc. degree programs, and I think you can really feel that in the towns.
Topeka is between Lawrence and Wamego. You could tour the state capitol building and sites re: Brown vs. Board of Education.
Manhattan is on the very edge of the Flint Hills, which really are beautiful.
So I guess in general: head west for outdoorsy stuff, and head east for more cultural/history stuff.
If you like breweries, I can give recommendations for Manhattan, Topeka, and Lawrence.

I agree that the museum will take about an hour. It's fine, but I'm not a huge Wizard of Oz fan. There's not much else around Wamego. If you end up going to Manhattan, I did like the Flint Hills Discovery Center. K-State has an ice cream shop where they make their own ice cream from the dairy that they have, and it's delicious. I enjoy Aggieville. I really love downtown Lawrence. Topeka has an Evil Knievel museum which was pretty good. I took my mom there and she loved it because it was more of her generation.
