I literally asked my kids if we could skip it this year, but they were sad. Ours is one with little boxes that I fill...I feel like if I could buy a pre-filled one it would be even easier, although I'd have to get 2. But I told them they needed to give me ideas that would fit in our tiny little boxes, and all they said were candy and mochi's or other little toys.
We don’t do advent calendars or actually we do but it is the $5 ones with chocolate.
I did the Lego one year as my foray into fancy advent calendars and it was a lot of packaging and the kids didn’t build everything. So I left the idea of fancy advent calendars and went back to simple.

We have a felt one that hangs on the wall with pockets to fill. My 3 kids take turns (they each get 8 turns and then on the 25th they all get a holiday PEZ). I like this better as they get a variety of things over a theme and it is reusable. Things I have done chapstick, hand lotion, fun pens, chocolate bars, lottery scratch offs, hot cocoa packets, bookmarks, Pokémon cards, $5 to $10 giftcard to DQ (near our middle school), fidgets, fun and/or cozy socks.
Annual plug for the online Jacquie Lawson Advent calendar. definitely religious tones with church scenes and nativity. Full of little activities and games. My kids have enjoyed this for years and it is a tradition now.
I don’t always get all of them a toy advent calendar because we also do Saint Nick on the night of the fifth and there are two December birthdays. So it’s already a lot. However, I do get Star Wars Lego for my son’s birthday and he says he wants it again (turning 14).
I was looking at some of the Sephora ones, but I was thinking of just making them a Christmas gift to open post-Christmas instead of having to be an Advent calendar, because they are so expensive.
The good housekeeping list of Advent calendars for teens has some good ideas (chapstick, nail polish, escape room, etc).
I think this is the year we revert back to a basic chocolate calendar. I want to find something that's a slight step up from Trader Joe's, because he's developed a taste for quality dark chocolate.
We did a science experiment set a few years ago and toward the end he said that calendar was stressful. He felt like he needed to carve out time for an experiment a day. Ha! Last year we did a Lego calendar. It was fun to open, but the builds are so tiny and just end up as mini Lego confetti at the bottom of our Lego bin.
I didn’t know this was a thing. We have a couple of reusable countdown things we’ve had forever — a small wooden tree with ornaments for each day, an old Santa-themed ornament that says something different each day. It has never occurred to me to get something new each year.
If you're looking for a fun different one, the online Disney store has a cool Droid Builder one from Galaxy's Edge. I liked it because while there are 24 doors, most of them are parts, so there's 5 Droids at the end and they're all cute. It is on the high side though. Meri Meri has a couple of fun jewelry kit ones, where you make a themed bracelet, and a really nice Nutcracker one that's reusable.
We have one of the fabric reusable countdowns from Target with little pockets. I just add a piece of Dove chocolate or something to each day and my kids trade off days since only one fits. lol The extra candy is in the pantry and the other kid can take a piece if they want.

DS(17) -Universal Yums from Cost Plus He loves candy DD(15) - Adagio Teas She loves hot tea and the loose leaf tea calendar has a lot of interesting holiday flavors that I know she will enjoy.
DS doesn't seem to care much about advent calendars - besides chocolate ones, he's gotten the Nintendo one with the mini figurines (super cool) and a Harry Potter one (kind of lame). With the chocolate ones, he opens the window each morning, but doesn't end up eating the chocolate, so I just end up with all these mini chocolates in a candy dish in the living room. Maybe I need to get ones with 'better' chocolate, lol.
I'm the biggest advent calendar person in our house, and I am EXTREMELY bummed out that there's no Body Shop one this year - I've gotten that one for several years now and have always really looked forward to it. I need to find a replacement...

My 10 year old boy begged for a Lego Star Wars advent calendar again so I've already bought it. He still has all the previous years and plays with them constantly so it's a good investment in play value for him. It also helps that he's an only child so I'm not spending $50 on multiple children.
I have one that you fill yourself and I always put a chocolate for each kid and then some days get little slips of paper with a holiday activity - watch a holiday movie, decorate the tree, take a walk/drive to check out holiday decorations, shop for a toy to donate, bake cookies for teachers/neighbours, etc.
I’ve done one for DD with Disney pins for the last 4 years. We have certain characters we collect and I spend the year scouring eBay for fun finding the pins. Last year DS figured out what she was up to and wanted in on it so I made them alternate who got to do the calendar for that day. I added a few “double pin day” to some of the later days. This year I’m going to have two pins in each drawer so they both get to participate every day.
Besides that, we buy some of the chocolate ones from Trader Joe’s or their dad fills up some recycled calendars with Halloween candy. Last year we got the IKEA ones also only because we happened to be at IKEA when they had them.
I skipped the Lego ones finally this year because I'm so sick of all the little pieces everywhere. For my boys, I was able to score 3 different teenymates ones at Dicks. Two are football, one might be baseball or basketball. I still need one for DD but she's easy because she's still young and loves everything.
DS1 (17) is getting Lego Star Wars DS2 (12) is getting a Stranger Things funko pop one
Previous years we have done specialized candy ones, a chapstick one, other funko pop ones etc. Our elf brings them every year. I will never stop no matter how old they are lol
I think I’m going to get my 12 year old an escape room one. And a puzzle one for myself lol.
We do the Exit room advent calendars as a family every year! It's fun to try and figure out the puzzles together every day. This will be our third year doing them and both my kids are excited to start (I bought this year's super early when I saw it was on sale on Amazon and didn't want to chance it being sold out).
