I don't really have a choice now, my department had to eliminate one FT position so they just aren't filling mine. Makes me a wee bit nervous, not like I expect something bad to happen, but if something did and I don't end up with a baby at the end of this pregnancy I won't have a job to return to I don't even know why that thought crossed my mind but it did!
at least no one had to get fired/let go to make the budget work. I will not be jobless either, I will return as a relief worker and pick up shifts sporadically when people take vacations and whatnot.
The same thing happened to a friend of a friend. She worked in NY for a major financial company. She was pregnant and a manager, and her boss told her that she had to let someone from her department go. So she laid herself off. Got a nice severance package and got to SAH just like she wanted to.
I didn't know you decided that, congrats! And don't stress, all will be fine.
yeah we debated back and forth. a job share position would be ideal but there aren't any available now, that could change in the next year or 2 though. I figure being home most of the first year will be good, then I'll see after that.
I do have to pay for 2 days of daycare each week whether or not I use it. 4 shifts a month will cover 8 days of daycare, so hopefully I can break even
It actually only took me a month to find a job after grad school, I was one of the lucky ones, many classmates looked for months. Social work is weird, it can be very hard or very easy to find a job, depending on what you want to do and how much you want to be paid
I also work at a large hospital and quite my full time position after DD was born to work 2 days a week per diem. It worked out okay, although we had to get insurance through DH' employer and income was not guaranteed. After about a year a coworker retired from a part time position and I was able to move in to that. It's been great.

That is what happened to me. We were debating about whether or not I was going to return since my job required a lot of hours. I ended up getting laid off while I was pregnant with DD. I interviewed at another firm, but I was 8 months pregnant at the time. I didn't get an offer.
