DS16 had an endoscopy a few weeks ago and the results just got posted today. The report says it found Chronic Gastritis, but the test for H.Pylori was negative and since he doesn't drink or take a lot of otc pain meds, by process of elimination he likely has Type A. I've already gone down the medical rabbit hole so there's no going back at this point. Just wondering if you or anyone in your family has this diagnosis and if you were able to find some semblance of normalcy with maybe a change in diet or something else? DS was tested because he dropped over 20lbs from his already small frame, and has frequent stomach pain with vomiting, fatigue, and a few other seemingly non-related symptoms. He is getting blood work next week in advance of his f/u w/ the doctor which I'm hoping can help really zero in on a Dx. I just want my kid to feel better and this has been going on for close to a year now.
ETA: since he first started having issues he's been prescribed Nexium and Cyproheptadine at different times and neither one has really made a difference with his symptoms.
Yes. I take 2 prescription GERD meds- protonix twice a day and famotidine once a day, have lowered dairy and fats, and caffeine, and have a zofran prescription for nausea. I would say the antacid meds- try and make sure he takes them 30 minutes before eating, to give them time to kick in- I found that's helped. I take one in the morning before breakfast, and one before dinner. The famotidine I take before bed. Yes- that's for treating acid- and I have that too- but keeping the acid under control and lowering fats/caffeine has made a huge difference in the gastritis pain and nausea as well. I don't have H. Pylori either. Just my experience.
I don't know the different types (I wasn't aware there were any tbh), but I've had chronic gastritis show up on every endoscopy I've had. I had to go through trial and error to find a PPI that works. The only one that's given me any kind of relief is Dexilant, which requires a prior auth from insurance. 😐 I also take famotidine daily.
Sleep also really, really impacts my stomach. I was a night shift nurse for a year and a half before I had to switch to days. Within days, my constant heartburn ceased. I've actually inadvertently skipped my dexilant a lot recently and haven't been impacted too badly....
My GERD is either impacted or caused by gastroparesis, so my food triggers aren't the common ones (top ones for me are raw veggies - carrots especially, cream cheese, random fruits but only sometimes). However, I have times when all I can tolerate are plain things - mashed potatoes, rice, pasta, cereal. All low fiber so it doesn't sit in my stomach and produce more acid. Ideally, I'd eat small, frequent meals, but I'm really bad at that (again, I'm a nurse) I just have to listen to my body and not try to force myself to eat even if I haven't eaten a lot and feel like I'm wasting food. I was always called a picky, slow eater growing up (by almost everyone except my parents, thankfully) and it still bugs me when people commment on how I'm eating.
