Diwali/Deepavali signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. What a timely reminder this year! I pray that we can leave behind the hatred and evilness that seems to have taken root. And move into a time of peace and prosperity in the coming year. Happy Diwali to all!
Since Monday night, I've been using Diwali as an excuse to taste test the differences between a gulab jamun and a kala jamun. I also got some chocolate burfi too because that stuff is so good. I went to the sweet shop to get a bunch of boxes for my referring doctors and we delivered all of them yesterday. The store people said they were expecting a line out the door starting yesterday so thankfully I missed the big rush.
I took the kids to a really big outdoor celebration that was held nearby. We had a fun time! I was initially very hesitant to go and had expected to not enjoy it. I've shared how it's taken me several years to get used to it being totally normal to celebrate Diwali and having the non-Indian people being totally cool with it.

And, there go the fireworks! (it's already well into nighttime here)
It was a national holiday today, and friday/sat is the weekend in this state, so the whole place is in celebration mode. People in other states took friday off to get a 4 day weekend and traveled here. It's so joyous to see.
The main temple on the island is near to my house, and it's just been a steady stream of colors and flowers and lights and, of course, the aforementioned food all day.
Happy Diwali! sent What was your conclusion on the taste test? Kala jamun is a harder/darker fry, if I recall.
Oh I was half joking with my post. I would never turn down any deep fried desserts soaked in sugar syrup!
But if I had to pick one, I think I'd go with the kala jamun. It's like a more sophisticated version of the gulab jamun.
This year my parents sent me a box with a new sweet. It was rose and almond laddu and OMG I inhaled that out of the box! Gulab jamun has been dethroned from my top spot.
I feel like this is one of those holidays where everyone is welcome, encouraged to celebrate. Like lunar new year or loi krathong and songkran, junkanoo, carnivale. At least that's how I've always been made to feel.
I cannot think of anything more inclusive than "I set aside cookies I've been baking since 4am so that you could be part of this, too"
I'll celebrate any occasion so long as you welcome me and give me something tasty which defines every celebration I've ever encountered. Even religious celebrations like iftar and Eid with ramadan everyone is welcome, even my atheist self. I've even gotten invites from taxi drivers for evening break fast.
So, I'll celebrate light and life and for a moment forget the potential dystopian shitshow we might find ourselves in next week.
sequins, laddu is my all time favourite sweet and that flavour sounds amazing! I'm so looking forward to having just basic laddu tonight and a few lovely burfi.

I'll have to keep an eye out if I see that one. It sounds really good. I like almond and I don't mind rose in small amounts.
