I know I've mentioned the house on my street where there's some wierd stuff going on. Weds night, two cars pulled in after 1am and woke me up. First time anyone has spent the night there in a couple of months. Yesterday whoever was doing work there left the porch light on for the first time in months also. So kids kept trying to ToT there despite no one being home. Someone spent the night again last night. The late night headlights and slamming of car doors is not great for my sleep...
Today is my last day of work until Nov 18! I am very excited to unplug and unwind for 2 weeks.

deadwing enjoy your time off! Now you can live blog for us surveillance on that house...or stand outside their window at 6am and bang some pots and pans.
but i cannot stop thinking about how awkward it is, as an adult, to walk across an intersection where there is a crossing guard for the nearby school. it seems that they are required to stop traffic for all pedestrians so there is always an awkward little jog for any adult out running or walking their dog or something.
(and yes, this scenario does come up often due to proximity of our neighborhood to an elementary school.)
Work is dumb and we had to postpone a big review that was scheduled for today because we just can't seem to get all the cats herded. BUT that meant I could WFH, which is great because it took forever to get everyone settled after ToT last night.
It was a weird Halloween- DD ended up inviting a couple of friends over to pass out candy with her, and I dropped DS off with neighborhood friends to make the rounds, so I really only passed out candy for about 45 min while the girls did a quick loop to see a neighbor's haunted house set up and I didn't walk around at all. I can't decide if I miss the days of walking around with other families and hanging out in people's driveways or if I'm happier with this low-key version.
Quiet Halloween with no ToT-ers, which isn't really a surprise for my neighborhood.
I had the oddest thing happen this morning. I was taking Mom back home early (her choice). I was stopped at a light, waiting to turn left. I was in the turn lane with my blinker going. Next thing I know, Mom is letting me know that the person in the truck to the right of me is trying to get my attention. As best I can figure, he must have thought I was going straight and didn't realize my blinker was on. I turned it off and he nods his head like, "yup, you've fixed it." It got me all stressed out that my blinker wasn't working right or that I'd turned the right blinker on instead of the left.
On the drive home, I was behind a pickup at a light where I was turning and it was still dark enough to see how my blinkers were behaving in his tailgate and I don't think there's an issue. But it's too early in the morning to have to think about my car.
DS had fun ToT with friends last night. His math teacher scheduled a unit test today, so DS is not happy about that. (I can't blame him - seems mean, frankly, to schedule a test the day after a holiday where you know a lot of kids will be eating too much sugar and staying up later than usual.)
DH, DD, and I enjoyed our quiet evening yesterday watching a movie together (Despicable Me 4). Unfortunately she woke up with a sore throat today and some nasal congestion, so she's staying home from school today to rest.
We (minus DD) have plans to go to a friend's house later this afternoon for some apps before the HS football game tonight, so I'm looking forward to some time with friends.

kath16 as someone who drives thru 2 intersections with crossing guards daily for school drop offs I appreciate the guards stopping for anyone. I think it just makes things easier and then no guessing on when the guard is going to stop us or not, you just know they will stop for all.
maudefindlay, the wierdness continues, but not much post-worthy. One of the two cars that has been there overnight belongs to the dad of the family that isn't living there any longer.
I'm listening to The Cure's new album and it's melancholy in the best possible way, as only they can do.
I saw a bad accident yesterday. Three cars and they all had airbags go off. I called 911 to report it but didn't get out to check on anyone because I had to pick my kid up at school and I didn't want her waiting alone - I knew school would clear out quickly because it was Halloween. I feel very bad about myself even though I saw all the emergency vehicles on the way there within two minutes of my call. I feel like I should have stopped and done...something.
It's a bummer when you only get 5 doorbell rings on Halloween! We live at the end of a really long street with little neighborhoods offshooting the street the whole way. What I think is happening is that kids aren't continuing all the way to our last section of said street (which has about 30 houses and goes down a really big hill).
Halloween is H's favorite holiday and he decorates the hell out of our property, complete with smoke machines, music, lights, decor, the whole 9. And then to just get 5 parties of kids, such a disappointment. I feel bad for the guy.
He said last night that he wants to organize a Halloween lights "destination" thing for our street for next year, so that more kids come. I told him to go for it. I'll be interested to see how it all shakes out.
My kid was gone for 3+ hours and had a blast. He was an inflatable, but abandoned it about 30 minutes in. He rushed home to pivot to Nerf Guy so that he could see and walk.
I had a bunch of kids from my work (elementary school) ToT at my house. It was so fun. One kept saying "It's me it's me!" and another (a kinder) just stared at me. Several groups of fifth graders were happy to see me. I got lots of "see you tomorrow Mrs Macmars!" as they left my porch. One fifth grader told his group of friends that I am an awesome teacher. <3
ToT was mostly a success! 2yo twins were being, well, 2. I had to carry one for a large portion of the time and that was exhausting!
We left at the same time as some neighbors and DD1 (5) really wanted to go with all of her friends, so we moved as a big pack. She had a blast until the end when she was clearly exhausted and whiny and she needed a ride back home in our wagon. She went to bed at the same time as her younger sisters (late for them, early for her), and I'm pretty sure everyone was asleep almost immediately. Unfortunately I slept like crap and really just want to take a NAP and clean up the Halloween decorations instead of WFH.
My 15yo went trick or treating with a couple friends. He was annoying his friends were complaining about their feet hurting after an hour and had to quit. lol He said he wanted to keep going! He loves candy
Since, we don't get trick or treaters where we live, DH & I went the restaurant down the road to split some nachos. I miss my boys being little and trick or treating but this is a good alternative. We got my son some tenders and headed home and watched Scream. First time my son ever saw the movie. Overall it was a fun evening.
Now I am working and doing some Christmas shopping. Tonight is the Homecoming game and the HOCO dance is tomorrow.
Anyone know anything about stand alone ice makers? Looking for a small one for DS dorm. I see self cleaning, does it really not need to be cleaned at times?

Did I miss drama here yesterday? Someone deleted their account that had posted in the creepy contractor thread but I can't see any reason why they would have deleted. Yes, it's none of my business, but I'm nosy, okay? LOL
I might have said something about this yesterday, so may be a repeat because I am just so shocked. This is our 3rd Halloween here. The first year, I put out all my stuff from my old house, where the neighborhood went all out. We had two ToTer. Last year, we bought candy and left lights on, but I don’t think we got one. So this year, we didn’t even buy candy.
And the, at 4:20, I notice some kids at the house across the street. I’m on an (all day 😫) Webex meeting. But I jumped up and went to the cabinet and grabbed some granola bars and threw them at H, while panicking over kids. He, being more rational than me, found some slightly more candy adjacent somethings in our cabinet. These low sugar, coconut chocolate patties, that I had rejected as not good. So, you know… we have guaranteed no one will be back. 😂 We had one more group, that took the rest of our crappy leftovers, at which point H went out and unscrewed the lightbulbs from our dusk to dawn lights.
I am a Halloween lover, so I kind of don’t like living in a neighborhood this lame, where I’ve become that person. But here I am.

I was just reading the "Trump is melting down" thread on CEP and someone said it was VillainV. I think it was probably over the Taliban thread.
Happy Friday! I'm off today. I'm going to do the usual stuff around here; tidy up the house, go for a walk, workout, and then and go for a bit of a drive to the college town 45 minutes north of us to do some shopping. I will probably get sushi at Wegmans for lunch and meander around Trader Joes, maybe Target. Basic mom stuff, lol.
My mom follows my school on FB and will probably figure out we're closed today and ask what I'm doing. I feel bad not inviting her with me but I just need a day alone.
Got my Covid and flu shot yesterday. It was a really, really bad decision. I have been up all night with chills and then a fever and every bone in my body hurts. I was on the fence about the Covid booster since I react so strongly to it but I'm possibly in relapse and will be spending a lot of time at the hospital over the next few months. Blah.
We ended up watching A Nightmare on Elm Street last night which I had never seen before. I had no idea it was about literal nightmares lol Why was Johnny Depp lounging in bed with a tv on his lap??
lavenderblue how long did you keep your kittens coned or in the surgery shirt things post spay?
Our kittens have gotten out of everything we have tried to keep them in and I’m wondering when we can stop trying.
As long as I could, but it was definitely less than a week. My one kitten got out of 3 different surgery suits and I still haven't even found them. It's like she took them off and then hid them LOL I think the biggest thing is to just make sure that they aren't messing with their stitches.

That sucks. I am sure it was that compounded with the discussion in the student loan thread last week (which I think ended up deleted?). I know I offended her in that thread and feel badly about that. I hope she takes a break and comes back - she is a lovely person and a valued member of this community.

totally agree!
i just feel like as the walker/runner in this scenario, it feels really awkward to have another adult help you cross.
We are leaving for the most beautiful “floating island of garbage” today. We are there for 11 days, which is a long time, but we have two weddings a week apart. The first is our niece, second a lifelong friend of H, it worked out we could stay, so we are.
The inevitable will happen by tomorrow. H will start speaking spanish to me first, I will start speaking English as if it’s my second language, I will get frustrated and phone a friend to practice my English.
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus
I think being a member of the armed services can be difficult on this board and in current times.
I work with the military and veterans and I have to focus on all the good people and things. I know a lot of people don’t understand why I stay with my job.

The super long student loan thread was deleted? What happened dramatic in there?
Villainv - I also hope you are able to take a break and come back, you are definitely a valued member here. I have always enjoyed your input.

We got probably 20-30 trick or treaters last night - I once again forgot to count! They mostly come in groups, including one large group of probably 15 kids, so everyone shows up within about an hour and then we're done. My dog did really well - he barked when they knocked, but then I'd pick him up and hold him and he was totally fine, wagging his tail and being friendly. He was dressed as a pumpkin and he's pretty cute even without a costume, so so many kids were like "awww! what a cute dog! he's a pumpkin!" and wanted to pet him. I think he enjoyed it!
This weekend is going to be pretty busy and I'm not really looking forward to tomorrow - I have a 5k for work in the morning, immediately followed by a conference. The conference was totally optional but my previous supervisor suggested it to me last year AND again this year, so I figured I'd go ahead and sign up. I am sure it will be interesting but it's about a heavy topic and it's all day. I hope that my former supervisor wants to hang out with me, lol - I love her and getting to spend time with her will make the day more enjoyable, but it's also possible she'll know a lot of other people there and want to also hang out with them (fair). I won't know anyone else.
