There is a cat who lives by or near the turnstile of the subway entrance closest to me. He/ she seems pretty chill, not skittish, etc… I left a cheap Tupperware bowl about 2 weeks ago, and after refilling it almost daily with water and today he came running over when I replenished it!
I didn’t pet him because cooties but I “psh psh psh’d” him and he happily trotted over! Subway Turnstile Cat ™️ is now my friend! I usually carry an extra water bottle and give him whatever is left, but now I kind of want to bring him some treats
DD (5) had a very close friend last year in pre-k who left for another school this year. She still talks about this girl often and a few weeks ago got an invite to her bday party. DD was THRILLED and has been talking about it for weeks. We go and birthday girl wouldn’t give her the time of day. Everyone else was from the new school so DD felt shy and didn’t know what to do. When we were leaving she went to give bday girl a hug and the girl rebuffed her (her body her choice! But still painful to see) and then called her a variation one letter off of DD’s name when saying bye (think Tara vs Kara). DD was absolutely crushed.
Aw scm1011, I'm sorry. That's such a bummer for your DD This part of parenting is hard.
I don't think I was very clear in my last post. I’m mostly feeling down that my kid didn’t get invited to a sleepover with someone I thought was a good friend of his. I’m not worried about being friends with the parents of his classmates; I have my own friends. I just mentioned it because I think it can be tough for my son to make friends in a small town, with a small school, where most parents know each other and already have their own social circles with those kids included. I still feel like I'm not articulating this right so just nevermind lol.

My heart. Man does this part of parenting suck.
Ugh, I’ve had this happen to my kids before too. It’s hard and I hate going to parties where we only know the birthday family for that reason. I’m sorry for your DD.
I just found out my BIL’s father who has ALS chose to travel to a state that offers medical assisted in dying (MAID) in the next 2 weeks. I am so,so sad for their entire family. I don’t know the rules in qualifying, but the last doctor report gave him 6 months at most. I just hate that it is happening entirely, but I hate more about the timing. They are a huge family that loves their holidays 😞
I was cleaning the house today - not a particularly deep clean, just the typical dust/vaccum/declutter and taking down the Halloween decorations. H asks me if this was the ‘pre-Christmas clean’. Dude, do you really think I’m not going to clean again until after Christmas? That’s almost 2 months from now.
I was already feeling an imbalance of household work but that really cemented it. He was doing some home improvements while this happened so he wasn’t just sitting around doing nothing but the home improvements are few and far between and I do just as many as he does.
Me and David had a volunteer thing this morning that had us up at 5am after a late night last night. It was super fun and really rewarding, but we are dead tired. I'm going to sleep so good tonight!
I'm redecorating my living room so me and H looked at furniture. I took a few pictures of possible purchases but this is where I get decision paralysis. I'm going to think on it for a week or so before making a decision. Anyone have any good midcentury modern online furniture recommendations? I'm looking for some side tables, end tables, a console table and a dining room table.
H has a track day tomorrow (weather permitting) so I'll get to sleep in, try and get a hike in if there's no rain, grocery shop, food prep for the week. I also need to tear down Halloween and put up Thanksgiving fall.
I got a pedicure this morning and then I went over to help at my parents’ new house. H had gone over earlier in the day to mow/get the leaves up and start spackling. Can’t wait for them to just be moved in and here and the work to be done but we have a long way to go.
It was the last nice day for a little bit. We’re getting 4-5” of rain over the next few days blah. I think tomorrow will mainly be a sit-on-the-couch and read/watch TV day.

In this cycle at our kids’ school, they are doing something so cool. They are learning about sustainable communities, learning about utopian and dystopian societies (and reading a dystopian book/graphic novel/audio book), and serving as urban planners, designing a sustainable and eco-friendly community. They are learning about human effects on the environment and what urban planners can do to improve things (or make things worse). They also get to learn more about a city of their choosing and discuss its history, as well as a problem facing the city and ideas for improving the situation.
I just sat with my younger child while he worked on one of his assignments he didn’t do earlier in the week (they have a lot of flexibility in scheduling) and he’s learning about the atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere and how they interact and about cities that are doing great work towards reducing carbon emissions.
I feel like pixy0stix in particular would find this interesting.
ETA - they are in the 4th and 6th grade respectively.
I had the most delicious sandwich from the coffee shop down the block for dinner. Sourdough bread, turkey, stuffing, cranberry, cheddar, green onion, grilled like a panini. Transitioning into November nicely over here.
My friend’s on her way over; we are going to have a drink here and then probably walk to a bar. H is almost home and I am off the clock from solo parenting 🙌🏻 It was a nice relaxing day overall with DS.
I’m sorry beerlover. I totally get your sadness. Last year the mother of one of ds’s best friends casually asked if he wanted to join them for a camping trip for the friend’s birthday and then never followed up. Then the weekend before his birthday we were at our local pool and ran into another friend’s mom. She said her son wasn’t at the pool that day because he was on the birthday camping trip. DS was crushed and I was crushed for him.
Our hotel in Charleston is in the perfect spot, but I also dropped like $$$ on things at the stores. I did tell my kid the lake pajamas are a Christmas gift and she is wearing the hill house dress more than once! She looked gorgeous in it though.
So far we’ve only had a squabble over finding ice cream after our ghost tour.
Last evening was DS1’s last football game of the season. It was in a town 4 hours away on the other side of the state so DH and I went and stayed the night. DS2 stayed with a friend. The team lost the game but it was so close. It’s been such a frustrating season, with terrible coaching, really hard teams and they didn’t win any games. I’m feeling so nostalgic tonight, that the next time DS1 plays it’ll be his senior year. Omg…
There were three deer in my neighbor’s backyard this morning! Rare sight in the city!
Beyond that our weekend is pretty blah, my husband is having outpatient surgery later this week and will be restricted what he can pick up and do for a few weeks so we are trying to think anything we need to do that is awkward or heavy before then. We put up the fake Christmas tree (empty) and he painted a window (and washed the brushes). Now mowing to mulch the leaves. I feel like I’m missing something but hopefully it will occur to us.
My sister and niece are visiting, and we went to Indianapolis to experience the Taylor Swift weekend. It was really fun. Everyone was so happy and joyful, even in the 3 hour merch line. My sister wore a roe roe roe your vote tshirt and got sooooo many compliments.
My H has the cold I had last week, so we’re laying low this weekend. I’m going to dinner with a friend tonight. Should be fun - I haven’t seen her in almost a month!
I super enjoyed my extra hour of sleep last night. Coming of of a busy few weeks, and having to work some weekends, this was good timing for it.
I'll be in Quito in two weeks! We packed yesterday to make sure there weren't any last minute purchases needed. I am so excited for this trip. H and I both really need a vacation. We will be incredibly active in the Galapagos, but, it will be 15 glorious days of decision making limited to what I want to eat and drink. Mainland Ecuador is undergoing planned blackouts because they mostly rely on hydroelectric and there has been a massive drought. I know the economy is really hurting, so I am hoping my tourist dollars will help someone in a small way.
I think they are deciding this week if I will get the internal position I applied for. My direct boss and the two managers I interviewed with told me I am the best person for the job, so I am hopeful. This will be at least a 30% raise and the title will open doors in other industries if that is a path I want to take.
Today's plans include a trip to Costco, starting to deep clean the house, and reading.
My kids actually let us sleep in this morning!!! I think this may the first time since having kids that I actually got the extra hour of sleep. I’m bummed about the time change tho, the sun will set at 4:30 PM this evening. That’s really like late afternoon. ☹️
We’re taking the kids to see The Wild Robot today! It will be our first time seeing a movie in the theater with the kids. (They’ve been with school already tho). They are 6 and 9 but are sensitive, so we haven’t taken them because the movies are so loud and they get scared. I thought this one would be a good one since DD1 read the book in school last year. But we watched the trailer last night and DD2 is already scared. I probably should have showed her the trailer before I bought the tix. 🤞she doesn’t freak out! I’ll bring headphones and she can sit in my lap if she’s scared, I just hope I don’t have to leave the theater with her and miss the movie. I’ve heard it’s really good!

Have you looked at Article? I have a couch and ottoman that have held up beautifully to kid and pet nonsense. My best friend has a leather sectional, several indoor side/end tables, and 3 outdoor sets (table/chairs, sectional, and individual chairs). We've both had our furniture for several years and are still really happy with all of it.
beerlover, I too moved to a small city where everyone grew up together, or somehow seem related. DD wasn't frequently invited to things for a long while because the parents have all been friends forever, many just didn't know how to invite her since they didn't know me. It gets better as the kids get older and make their own plans independent of parents. The rural dynamic is definitely something, it's harder for our kids to find their group, but they do get there.
After a year of living in my house, I'm finally able to move from catching up on basic deferred maintenance and larger projects, to actually starting to decorate, organize, and suit the house to my lifestyle. I have trouble tackling these smaller kinds of projects, there just seem to be so many little things, but I started a list and am trying to do 1-2 per weekend. Today's project is my clothesline. I have 2 large clothesline poles in my yard, they are solid metal and look like a large lower case n, they are about 6-8 feet apart. They don't have any sort of hooks, so it seems like all I need to do is tie a cotton line across them, but I think they may move around. I am pretty sure I'm missing something very obvious that will result in me spending several hours and way too much money.

Oh, that's great to hear! Our favorite dining room pick is from Article.

I seconded Article. I have two couches, a bed and dresser. Everything is great!

I am feeling the itch to redecorate my living room.
I’m thinking about a modern curved sofa (not sectional) to add some pizazz/umph. DH is stuck on a standard sofa from Costco with the lounge and does not understand that having a chaise doesn’t make it “jazzy”.
I’m deep cleaning the main floor of the house. Kitchen, dining room, living room. It’s just a cornucopia of crap. The kids will be helping me. DH is gonna do whatever he’s planned (likely drywall and electrical), and then I’m going to plant my bulbs! I need to place a grocery pick up order too, for tonight or tomorrow. I’m tired of a messy house!!!! And of eating out! I foresee much crabbing, but also much happiness when it is over because we ALL feel better with a sparkly home.

This is cracking me up, it 100% reminds of me and h. I would want the curved sofa and he would be completely baffled that we ever need to redecorate the living room between when we bought the house and when we die.
You will not be shocked to hear that both his parents (divorced so two households) both have time capsule houses where nothing has been changed for decades because it's "still perfectly good".
