My DD's tablet is on its last legs. It's a Kindle Fire and from what I've read about them, we did pretty well for it to live 4 whole years.
DD is almost 9 years old and in grade 3. She still loves all the games on her Fire and I don't trust unsupervised internet whatsoever so I want some kid elements and lots of parental controls. BUT I do want it to grow with her because she's started getting little research assignments and it would be good if she could use it for school.
We switched to an iPad last year from a Fire tablet and I'd never go back to anything else. We got a slightly older generation one from Walmart and I think it was like $200.
I have a bunch of parental controls on it - time limits, no web browser, all apps need approved through me, etc. - it's pretty locked down.

re: Fire - that lasted a lot longer than we did, 4 days. I couldn't deal with that thing, it was soo slow for me. Our 1st grader has a very old iPad of ours and has been using it for years now. We have it locked down; similar to beerlover - all apps need approval, screen time tracking, etc.
My younger two kids (ages 7 and 4) have kindle fire tablets, but for the older ones (10 and 12) we definitely prefer iPads. They are so much more user-friendly.

We upgraded from Kindle Fire to Samsung Galaxy Note tablets. Maybe not my smartest move, since we are otherwise an iPhone family. But the price was reasonable and after getting past the learning curve of setting it up, it has been fine.
I use Google Family Link for parental controls, which has lots of options.
We have a Fire tablet and a Samsung, and the Samsung is significantly better. Our toddler now uses the Fire tablet and our 10 year old uses the Samsung. I'm happy with the parental controls and I'm able to do them from my iPhone.

Ours has a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8 and an iPad whatever gen that is a few years old enough to be on sale last year for around $200.
The Samsung is far easier to lock down than the iPad, but both parental controls work well. I’d trust a third grader with either one. I prefer iOS to Android.
She uses the iPad more because she’s addicted to Crayola Create and Play.
