I'm trying to embrace the style update of straight, bootcut, or wide-legged jeans instead of skinnies (at least not every day lol, I am not giving up my skinny jeans for good any time soon). I wear my black jeans more than any others this time of year, and I'm having trouble finding what I'm looking for.
I'm short, so they need to come in short length or petite (size 10), I don't want solid black so they look like dress pants but actual black jeans (some fading or distressing ok), and most importantly because this seems to be the sticking point, not high rise or super high rise, because I'm very short waisted and I've finally learned that all the high rise does for me in jeans means they will slide down and give me saggy crotch.
Any suggestions? I'm a bit numb from looking through a ton of sites and not finding what I want.
I bought some size 10 short bootcut black jeans from Old Navy and just wore them for the first time over the weekend and liked them. They are super stretchy and I started to have to pull them up as I wore them, so I might also buy a size 8. They are the Wow bootcut ones and they carry short lengths in store if you wanted to try them on. I am also very short waisted and can't do high rise pants. It seems like almost everything is high rise now! For a looser fit, I also like the Old Navy wow boyfriend jeans that are mid-rise.

High rise are my nemesis! My belly is not big but a tight button across it is no bueno. In addition to the baby boot from gap I also really like their girlfriend Jean.
I’ve had really good luck with American Eagle. Not sure which style my current black jeans are, but they are very comfortable and I think look nice and come in short.

I have 3 in different cuts and love them all. Madewell Perfect Vintage Jeans in lunar wash (had to size down), Frame le crop mini boot cut (they're stupid expensive but I randomly found them at Nordstrom Rack for $59), and Good American palazzo crop (had to size up).
Have you looked at Universal Standard? Their shorter length fits me without hemming (I'm 5') and they have a huge range of sizes and styles. I see plenty of what I would consider "black jeans" that actually look like jeans. Many are high rise, but these look like they might work.
I like Old Navy. they're comfortable and inexpensive. I just got some wow boot cut ones for $17.50 last week. (50% off)
ETA: I'd try to get there and try them on if you can. I found my size is not my usual size so I had to go smaller since they stretch and I have a flat butt.

This is my problem with Old Navy...they have so many options, but there's no consistency even within a style. I have 1 pair of OG straight, and 1 pair of I think girlfriend loose or something like that, but when I tried on the black jeans in both of those styles, they didn't fit the same at all. I know the WOW jeans didn't fit me well when I tried them when looking for blue jeans, but maybe I'll have to try them in black because they might be different.
American Eagle has been my go-to for regular jeans, and I did look there, but I think the ones I liked the look of best from there were extreme high rise, and I didn't want to even try them.
I ordered 1 pair from jcrew factory last night (bonus that there was a necklace in my cart that I also really wanted from there, but wasn't going to order until I had enough for free shipping). I will look into all the other suggestions today.

yeah, it's tricky for sure. It's all about finding the right style that fits you well. I loved Mossimo years ago before Target dropped them.
I got some straight black jeans at Gap recently that I really like. However, they are probably higher rise than you would like. I did get some black straight jeans from Democracy and they are mid rise, which I despise, but otherwise love them haha. Maybe check them out for mid rise?
