DD1 asked for a computer for Christmas. She's had her own Chromebook since 4th grade, but, at 5 years old, it wearing out and she's looking for something more advanced. She wants a laptop, not desktop. I don't want to buy Apple because they're overpriced. Has anyone, or their teens, had luck with other laptops? TIA!

I've only ever had Macs as I do like them and they last a long time. My teenage kids are still using my old Macbook Pro which is from 2014. But good PC laptops are Acer, HP, Lenovo. I would choose based on what specs they will need in terms of RAM, harddrive storage. I would go with at least 16GB RAM and 512GB hard drive.
DD has a chromebook through school that she uses for everything, and seems to like it fine? She also has an ipad, as does my other older child. It doesn't seem like there's really much they want to do that they can't do on an ipad (though I know you said you didn't want apple).
We are getting DD2 (13) a Macbook for Christmas. High school is BYO device and we're an Apple family. DH had a Dell laptop until recently that he liked

We have a communally-owned old MacBook Pro. I couldn’t even tell you how old that thing is. It was H’s, then it was mine, now it’s mostly used by the kids. If she’s into digital art, design, anything in that space I do think a Mac is better, even refurbished is a good option.
For just general word processing, browsing, typical games (not like a full gaming computer), I really like the Dell Latitude I use for work. I’ve had no issues with it.
librarychica, you make some good points. DD1 is into digital art and design, so maybe I should consider a Mac. Also, the one Mac product I own has been going well for six years. Other WPs mentioned durability and I see why. Thanks, everyone!
