I think we have quite a few Michigan residents here so there might be some discussion.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has announced he won’t run for reelection in 2025. I have been hearing speculation for awhile that he plans to run for governor in 2026 since Whitmer has hit her term limits.
Thoughts?
He did great things for the city of Detroit. I’d like to see him as Governor. I think he’s pretty popular both in the city and state wide and I think he could do a great job as governor.

I’ve also heard speculation that the reason Buttigieg moved to Traverse City several years was to prepare to run for governor. Really, all of the names I’ve heard as the most likely candidates - Duggan, Pete, Garlin Gilchrist (current Lt Gov), Dana Nessel (current AG), and Jocelyn Benson (current SOS) - could be great options.
I wish Duggar stayed Mayor. He can do so much more great work. I think he and Pete as well as Benson and Nessel will be running for governor. I hope we don’t lose them all from their current positions.
I'm really hoping for Governor Buttigieg, but the other options also sound good. I hope they don't go all in on each other during the primaries. Maybe they can just get together and try to hash it out.
I'm concerned about finding somebody who can boot Tom Barrett from the 7th Congressional District. I didn't think that Curtis Hertel was going to win the seat. I've been around him a couple of times in work functions, and he's just meh. I'm elated that Elissa Slotkin will be our new senator, but I'm sad the district flipped back red.
Then I also wonder what direction Gretchen Whitmer will take. I know a lot of people are tossing her name out as a potential presidential candidate, but I think that it can't be a woman if we want to have any chance of winning.

I had heard speculation about Buttigieg running until this thread but I think that would be great. I don’t think Whitmer will be the democratic candidate in 2028 because unfortunately I think you’re right that it can’t be a woman. I do hope she plays a prominent role in 2028 though. Maybe a cabinet position if we take back the White House.

I highly disagree with this but I am one of the few that does not believe that misogyny was a major factor in election 2024. I think Gretchen will run in 2028. The only other place for her would be to run for Gary Peters seat if/when he retires and I don't see him doing that yet.

Maybe it wasn’t misogyny- I’m just having a hard time imagining have Two (2016 and 2024) highly qualified and intelligent women lose to the same unqualified/vile human and not have misogyny be a factor.

Buuuut, she's won Michigan twice, despite covid and 45 winning Michigan in '16. She was elected in '18, and again in '22. People love her here. And she has a track record of working across the aisle. She's not a total unknown person/persona in the midwest, which the dems MUST carry to win the White House.
Whitmer as Harris' VP was my dream team, but as that is no longer an option, I'm all in for her running in 2028.

Look - I love Whitmer and I’m not arguing that she shouldn’t be president. I do think she will run in the primaries but I don’t think the Democratic Party nationally is going to have the desire for a female nominee. We’ve had two very qualified women and they both lost to Trump. If it was a highly qualified/intelligent man I would brush it off but considering he is who he is we have to consider that half of our country likely won’t vote for a woman. If we are lucky enough to get a (non-rigged) election in 2028 we need someone that more people are willing to accept and I don’t think that’s a woman.
And while I do think a lot of people here love her, I also see an awful lot of ‘My Governor is a Pure Moron’ signs.
I think the best we can hope for is her on the ticket as a VP while we all rally around a white man.

I love Whitmer, a lot, but I also know A LOT of people who do not. I was actually shocked she won a second term but the R she was running against was awful.

I don’t think she would have won if Prop 3 hadn’t been on the ballot despite how bad her opponent was. With the state legislature flipping this year, I think it’s a bad sign as well.
