My six year old woke up Sunday and said she felt crummy. Ended up throwing up about an hour later.
She was fine the rest of the day until she spiked a fever Sunday night. Kept her home from school Monday but acted fine.
Tuesday I get a call from school that I have to come get her because she’s had two incidences of diarrhea. I was taking my older daughter to the doctor (she has walking pneumonia) and the doctor kindly gave her a quick glance over and said it was probably just the tail end of a stomach virus.
Kept her home yesterday, she acts totally fine, no bowel movements.
This morning she says her belly hurts, I tell her she needs to go to school, she ends up throwing up at recess and had diarrhea again. Again, she’s been totally fine at home - bouncing off the walls.
Is this just an extremely long lasting bug? At this point I am leaning towards bringing her back to the doctor tomorrow. I am not sure they can do anything but 5 days of this seems insane?
A mom in another group also recently said her 6 year old had intermittent vomiting - 4 times across the last 2 weeks. I wonder if an odd GI bug is going around.
I have no idea what that is, but I'd probably keep her home tomorrow (no matter how "well" she seems) and through the weekend and just hope it goes away soon.
Both of my kids have had tummy bugs in the past two weeks. DD1 had diarrhea for four days and DD2 is currently on day four of diarrhea though she also vomited at the beginning. Both of them started with inexplicable tummy pain.
I find it bizarrely persistent. I’m accustomed to 24-48 hour bugs. This is really getting old!
Eta: DD1 seemed to be better than had another incidence of diarrhea so I took her to the pediatrician and she said DD1 was fine but to avoid dairy. She had a glass of milk the night before so I guess that’s what caused the setback. There’s only so long you can keep 6 and under on the BRAT diet.

She is definitely staying home tomorrow - she won’t be vomit free for 24 hours.

Right? She was begging for hot cocoa this afternoon. In my experience all stomach bugs have been less than 24 hours. She did have a stretch of diarrhea when she was two that lasted at least two weeks. They ended testing her stool and everything but they never came back with an answer. I hope we are not starting that again - again for that she acted totally fine besides the diapers.
My DD had something like this a couple of years ago. It seemed to get better for a couple of days and then, boom! Back to vomiting. It was just bizarre because usually these things run their course and when they're over, they're over.
That’s the standard for my kid. Every since stomach thing drags on for a week and a bit for no apparent reason. I have no advice, but lots of commiseration.
DD had a stomach bug in Oct that lasted for almost a week. I remember telling my mom how awful it was since I'm used to a 1-2 day thing. She'd be fine most of the day and then throw up for several days. On and off fever, and ended up with an ear infection too

The doctor said just a virus but if she’s unable to go to school Monday she needs to be seen again.
They did not do a strep test but they said her throat looked fine. When she has had step in the past she has had very classic presentation. My older daughter gets the stomach pain and fever.
DS and I once had this weird stomach virus where we were sick for 10 days. We weren't vomiting or anything else that whole time, but we did have surpressed appetite and nausea. It's not common, but it is possible.

A very, VERY TMI update…
Well last night she soiled the bed with extremely liquid diarrhea. She had no knowledge until she woke up. She routinely wakes if she has to pee overnight so this was out of character. It also marked the first accident from this and a big step back. I put her in a pull up and when she got up again for the day she said oh I went again. She had a little bit of stool in the pull up. After I helped her get cleaned up/wiped from that I noticed blood on the toilet paper. We went back to the doctor this morning and now they are planning on testing her stool. They hope the blood is from irritation but didn’t see anything on a physical exam.
If she vomits, spikes a fever, complains of bad stomach pain or has black or tarry stool we need to go to the ED.
So now we are in a holding pattern. The lab closed at 11 and we weren’t able to get a sample before then. They don’t reopen until Monday.
ohh no! I'm sorry she is still having symptoms. And yeah, I think the first time a kid has truly water stools they can be a bit unprepared. Poor kiddo. I hope she improves from here and/or you're able to get a better medical answer soon.

I will share that when I was around that age or maybe even a little older, I vividly remember being sick and having an accident and being mortified because it was so unexpected (I remember thinking I was going to pass gas and then it being a big mess in my pj's). I've definitely told my kids that when they have an upset stomach when they are sick that anything can happen and if they feel ANYTHING to just run to the bathroom just in case.
But yeah, I do hope for you it's just a bug and that it passes soon!
I’m so sorry she’s still struggling with this. What an awful situation.
I apologize if this has already been mentioned, I tried to skim through again quickly, but has your daughter taken any probiotics? My toddler was on day 6 yesterday of intermittent diarrhea and decreased appetite. We started her on probiotic gummies yesterday afternoon and by dinner noticed an increase in appetite and some minimal firming up of her stool. She had been mostly listening to our diet recommendations but not eating enough to make enough of a difference.

We did start a probiotic yesterday and she had her first solid stool in a week today. So I am hoping we are finally getting better. Although the pattern has been one step forward two steps back so I am trying not to get too excited.

I had some stomach virus last Christmas. Literally, Christmas Day. Anyway, it dragged a bit in the days that followed and I eventually opted for probiotics because I never felt “safe” from an unhappy stomach making itself known. The probiotics reaaaaaally helped. I was surprised because I had never seen a reason to take them before.
