No be quiet when your watching a regular screening of a movie.
Also, this movie is going to make Avatar money.
I love Wicked, but the enthusiasm around this movie is more than I would have expected. Is it because of Arianna Grande being in it? I can’t figure out why people are so hyped up about it.
Also I’m so glad I learned on here that it is only Part 1. I wouldn’t have known that otherwise. I would have been so pissed if I didn’t know that and it ended on Act 1! I told a friend who is obsessed and already planning to see it multiple times and she didn’t believe me. LOL
The media and merchandising campaign has been bonkers. So many low and high end tie-ins. I think it’s reaching a ton of people who normally wouldn’t be interested or aware of it.
I think they learned a lot from the Barbie movie. I would expect more and more of this from movies from here on out.
I feel like over-hyping movies often ruin them! I mean- the people behind it make a butt-load of money, so I'm sure they don't care. But when I finally saw Barbie, I was actually disappointed. I had heard too much about it.

I’ve never really been on the Wicked train. I’ve often wondered if it was the next generation of theater kids’ Rent and I missed the pivotal drop time by a year or 10….15….
But the hype seems like the vibe I’ve always gotten from its fanbase. Very animated, very main-character, very high energy and all-consuming.
I have a theory that the people who think it’s ok to sing along at a non-participation performance also vastly over estimate their own singing ability.

and I don't want to hear you singing along even if you're amazing! It's still annoying.

The only people I would tolerate singing along before the official sing-along version screens are Ariana and Cynthia (or other cast members who don't need to be auto-tuned).

I can sing every bit of rent. I still never would sing it in theater.
Is this a lobert bert thing? She sucks and so do people who sing in theater.

The only theatre shows you are allowed (and encouraged) to be loud, sing, etc in is either if you are at British pantomime or at the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
This theatre kid will put your ass on blast if you ruin it for me. Legit STFU.
We're going to see it on Wedneday of T-Day week. When I bought the tickets 2 nights ago, I was the first for that showing (it's like at 1 something in the afternoon, no school that day for us). I'm interested to see how full the theatre turns out to be.

I do not consider myself a theater person and am not an Arianna Grande fan, but I saw it yesterday and it's great, did not disappoint. Cynthia Erivo can do no wrong in my book. She is amazing and was meant for that role. Arianna did well in her role, Glinda is annoying/a pretty flawed person, so her being extra works for the role because Glinda is extra.
I just got a flyer for a "dance along Nutcracker" for kids. *That* is the time to perform at a show. lol.
I love shows where they invite the audience to participate. But they have to invite you. (Last year SF's ACT did a gender bending Wizard of Oz during Pride month that encouraged the audience to sing along with the major chorus numbers and it was great fun. (you don't interrupt Somewhere Over the Rainbow. but everyone can celebrate Ding Dong the Witch is Dead)

rocky horror is a special situation. You should involve yourself!

I have never been to live theater to see a musical where people weren’t singing along! I had largely only seen regular plays in the theater until the last five years or so and I had started to wonder if it was expected now and I was wrong? It is super annoying though!

We saw it this morning. It was amazing! I’ve seen the stage show three times.
@@@ We took our 9 year old to it this past spring. I think the timing was kismet, because she’s just as obsessed as I am. I keep joking about it being a bad thing for my wallet with all of the merchandising. 🤣 @@@
We didn’t sing along. I promise! Even though my friend and I kept getting excited before certain songs. I learned awhile ago that it was only Act I and was surprised at the length, but it never really dragged. And I forgot how many songs there are! I didn’t read much about it otherwise, and I’m glad, because there were some surprises and Easter eggs that were 🤌

I think also, the movie is so much more accessible. So, for people who have been hearing about the musical for years but couldn’t afford to go, they can now see it.

I don't get the wicked love. I saw it in theater, and it was just ok. I can only imagine the hype is due to a massive media campaign combined with ariana grande. She doesn't have the fandom of taylor swift, but she still packs stadiums.
I don't watch tv with commercials, but I do follow reddit threads on those shows. The amount of complaints about wicked commercials is insane. I've rarely seen similar.
I was really worried when a family of 4 came in in full dress and sat next to DD and me, but thankfully aside from rummaging thru their bigass popcorn bags all movie they (and everyone else in the theater) stayed silent. I did appreciate that the preview said no singing.
I went to the Eras Tour several times at the theater and everyone sings along, as they should. I would hope no one walked in with expectations of people NOT singing or dancing at that.
I knew nothing of the show, but went to watch the movie yesterday. It was great! We all loved it! No one sang but there was a group of young girls who clapped after almost every song. That was pretty cute though!
We saw the movie this morning - three Moms and four kids. I’m not a big musical person but I thought it was great. Too long for kids but that’s on us and they all did surprisingly well.
Reporting back that while it was nearly 3 hours from the start time until credits (20 minutes of previews 🙄) it didn’t drag. Definitely could have shortened it to 2 hours though.
Overall it was exactly as “expected”. I’ve read the book twice and seen it live 4 times and listened to it a million times. Other than one “additional” scene and one drawn out seen, it was exactly as I had envisioned it.
I do think for those who haven’t been able to see the stage version, it will be just as magical, if not more so, as “the first time” for those who have seen it live. That’s whose opinions I’d be interested in hearing.

Poll option 3: Singing along to a broadway-based movie follows the same etiquette as seeing it on broadway. Shut your pie hole. Singing along to a cinematic concert experience follows the same etiquette as singing at a concert. Go for it. But also, consider your neighbor. Don't shout your tone deaf misinterpretation of complicated lyrics so loudly that they can't actually hear the artist. That is rude in an open-air concert, much less a closed cinema.

Actually, this came up then, too.
I was gonna say…lol
Luckily the theater we saw it in was a Dolby theater and was so fucking loud I couldn’t have heard anyone signing along anyway.
That said, I took 3 eleven year olds on Sunday. A woman loudly declared multiple times before it started, “Don’t you dare ruin this for me by singing.” Like every time new people sat down in the theater. My kid finally said, “Maybe she should apply that same thought process to her talking.” She got applause.

WHAT!? TWO HOURS AND FORTY MINUTES FOR ACT 1!?
We went last night and it was clear the people behind us didn't know it was only the first act and missed the "part 1" on screen at the beginning because once "to be continued" came on screen, they all said "WHAT?1?1?1?"
