Hey ladies! I have been lurking for awhile, this board is full of SO much information! I post occasionally now on the Pet board, Hobbies board and H&F, but not really locked down anywhere on here. I am in the process of planning a wedding and cleaning/decorating a house that's been a bachelor pad for 8 years all at once! I moved in with my fiance and lets just say you can TELL that he's been living here on his own... I haven't even started the decorating phase, right now just trying to find the best way to go through all the JUNK! Open to suggestions!
Eventually my first project is redecorating our bedroom. We inherited a solid wood bedroom set from my mother's side of the family and LOVE it. We both love the rustic type look for a room.
I am torn between bedding... hoping maybe to get some insight here! I need something that's going to look nice/be functional/be able to survive the pets (as they all seem to think its their bed instead of ours).
Personally I think I am leaning towards going the duvet route, but not sure. Asking my friends didn't help because I kept getting the 'its not like it makes a difference' response haha!
I think with pets a duvet cover is always a smart choice. I can't tell you how many times I've needed to strip it off to throw it in the wash after some unfortunate pet-related incident.
I think it's just a personal preference thing. The advantage to the duvet is that you can switch out the cover seasonally or switch out the actual duvet for a lighter weight one in the warmer months. It can be cheaper down the road to just change the duvet cover but I've found that it's expensive to buy the cover and the duvet initially. If you want to keep the dark brown year round and don't change your mind very often then go with the comforter if you like the flexibility then go with the duvet. I don't think that one would necessarily be more durable or hold up better with the pets than the other. HTH!
Personally, I find comforters easier than duvets because I suck at getting the duvet lined up with the cover. Since you're in Canada, I second reils on the flexibility point. It's nice to be able to adjust the level of warmth between summer and winter months.

I am leaning towards the duvet now largely because one of our cats has a long coat, and a bit of a hairball problem at certain times during the year no mater what we do (hairball food, treats, regular grooming, etc).
I love duvet covers! I have a brown block one in the winter but it just feels too visually heavy in the summer. I love the ease of switching them out and duvet covers take up a lot less room in storage!

Alright, so I took everyone's advice and I actually added the duvet cover set to our registry I hope that we get it, but if not then we're DEFINITELY buying it with the discount they are giving us to finish the registry! Thanks everyone!
And to put it on the bed, spread out your duvet. Then set the cover on top of it, inside out. Then clip the 4 corners of the cover to the corners of the duvet, and pull the duvet cover over and around, button the bottom, and shake it out.
These directions probably sound kind of unclear now, LOL, but try them when you're putting it together - someone posted them on the nest ages ago and it is the easiest way to put the cover on and off without wrestling it.
ETA: I don't mind a bedspread (thinner) vs. a duvet in the summer - it's small/thin enough I can easily throw it in our washing machine at home vs. having to lug it to the laundromat.
I grew up with only comforters because my family was cheap. Now we have duvets and I love them! So easy to wash and keep clean. We don't let our dog on the bed but I would think a pattern would be much better at hiding pet hair than a solid colored duvet. Do your pets have dark brown hair and that's why you're going with that color? We have a solid white duvet cover which goes with anything, has the crisp hotel that is popular right now, and is bleachable. But that is more for stains than pet hair.
