If one is puking a lot and not able to keep anything down, then yes. I lost 30lbs in about 3 weeks from puking. Dr's diagnosed it as hyperemesis (was pregnant) but then later found out I had lots of gallstones.

I have GERD and before I had treatment I lost a ton of weight. I'm just barely back to a healthy weight now that I'm on the right medicine. So it really could be just GERD.
I don't think just having GERD will make you lose weight. Maybe he's not eating b/c of the symptoms? or b/c he's having gallbladder pain? When my H had gallbladder issues he did lose a little weight b/c he threw up some after eating, so he was hesitant to eat, you know? Hope he gets some answers next week and can start feeling better soon. Has he tried anti acid pills? I take Zantac almost every day.
That's what it was for me. My stomach was always upset so I just didn't eat.
I lost over 50 lbs between giving birth and my 6 wk pp check up due to gallstones. I literally could only eat a bowl of oatmeal a day and that's it. What you described sounds a lot like what I went through. Thanks to google I also thought it might be cancer. After the surgery I feel amazing no problems at all. I was also 24 so he's not to young for that.
Oh, and I know of a few people who had gallstones. A few of them lost weight because they just didn't feel like eating or they were too sick to eat.
One person got their gallbladder removed and she lost a crap-ton of weight after the surgery.
She probably lost so much weight because when you don't gallbladder, if you eat anything fattening you get pretty bad cramps and or a long trip to the bathroom. She probably laid off the greasy food.
I have warned my mom to stay away from Dr Google. On a side note, did you know you can still get gallstones after your gallbladder has been removed?
At least that's what someone told me. I'll feel stupid if it's not true.
Yup, that happened to me. When they were removing my gallbladder, apparently some stones fell out and caused a blockage again. Very rare, but it happens.

Not true. The gallbladder only stores bile is doesn't make it and bile is what breaks down fatty foods. For about a month after surgery you might have these problems but once your system adjusts its pretty much the same. I haven't had any problems eating fatty/greasy foods post surgery.

Everyone is different I guess. It's been 6 months and I get cramps if I eat anything that is too fattening, which forces me to eat healthier at almost all times.

I'd be willing to bet it'll start getting better for you. Not that having to eat healthier is a bad thing. I went a little over board after a year of not being able to eat and gained back all my weight boo. I'm only about halfway back to my post surgery weight.
