I never have done this at work. I am unhappy at work in the fact that we have gotten raises once in 4 years. They say it is "growing pains" but I think it's bullshit. I want to stay there through school because of my seniority and I feel comfortable, but can I negotiate more vacation or more leave without pay? I know I can't get more money... I want to take time off when I need but never have enough hours.
Should I just keep pushing it and taking LWOP I don't have? I'm really becoming bitter about the whole thing.
i have no advice on how to request more time other than just going up to your boss and asking for it...but it obviously isn't that easy since you're asking about it!
You can ask for extra vacation, especially since you haven't had a raise in years.
What I would do is say these are the 3-5 quality reasons that I should get more vacation. Make sure you give specific reasons and examples of why you deserve it. Come in asking for a set number of hours or days.

I did exactly what UW suggested at my last job.
After a year and them giving me a hard time about actually using all my vacation. I went in and laid how several reasons of how I get my job done and make sure everything is covered when I take leave. I said that I needed more of a work life balance and asked for three additional days of paid leave and a week of unpaid.
