I'm here for the weekend with my parents and it's pouring. Yesterday we saw the 9/11 Memorial, had Wafels & Dinges. Tonight we're going to see Wicked. We're not such museum people. Suggestions welcome!
You could walk around in Macy's, Grand Central Station, Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Chelsea Market, or Eataly. Or the Century 21 discount department store.
You could see if the UN, Radio City Music Hall, or the Met Opera House offer guided tours.
Or try one of the bus tours, since they may have covered tops or you can at least stay in the bus part rather than go on the top.
Years ago we saw The Blue Man Group for free, by calling the Astor Place Theater's box office and volunteering to be ushers. We just handed out playbills before the show started, then grabbed any two empty seats we wanted for the show, then helped pick up paper for 20 minutes after the show. HILARIOUS show. And the surrounding neighborhoods are neat to just walk around.
How about taking the ferry out to the Ellis Island museum?
If you feel like taking the L or G subway to Brooklyn, you can get some great barbecue and craft beer at Fette Sau. They open at 5 pm today and 12 noon on Sat-Sun. And about a 10-minute walk away is Barcade, a craft beer bar with retro arcade games.
If you like shopping, Saks or Bloomingdales (which is currently having a F&F) are good places to get lost for a bit.
I really like Chelsea Market and Eataly, but neither is huge or has lots of other indoor stuff around it.
If you go to an area like Soho, there are a ton of shops close to each other so you won't be walking outside for all that long at any point.
I know you don't like museums, but the Met has some cool things that aren't just paintings -- like the Egyptian section and the American wing.
Grand Central is neat to see, and it is very easy to get to it underground because there are subways that go to it.
I would probably stay away from the UN since it is UN week.
If it stays clear, the West Village is a fantastic neighborhood to walk through and is very pretty even on a yucky day. And it is close to Chelsea Market.
I think today is supposed to be the only day with consistent rain (although it looks like it's cleared up right now).
I think there's a slight chance of rain tomorrow, but for the most part it should be a nice weekend.
In addition to the other suggestions, maybe you can see a broadway show midday. Go to Times Square to TKS (near the bleachers) and get discount tickets.
