Most of your skiing is going to be in North Lake Tahoe, which is my preference. South Lake is a little more exciting, with bigger resorts, night life, etc. and there are a few good ski areas. If you're just going for a few days of skiing, either option would be fine.
My husband and I like to stay in the cabins here: rusticcottages.com/index.html and then drive to Northstar, Incline, or Squaw Valley. There are easily 7 or 8 places within a reasonable driving distance. Squaw Valley and Incline Village both have really nice lodging, but usually expensive. If price weren't a concern, I'd be happy to stay there. My husband proposed at the top of the mountain at Squaw Valley :-)
There are always plenty of deals on hotels in the Tahoe area through Groupon, Travelzoo, and the like. In the next month or so, they'll probably start having good hotel/ski packages too.

Do you have a particular resort you're interested? Most have ski-in/ski-out options. I grew up skiing Northstar and really like it. Squaw is objectively better, but the runs are less defined, and I just don't like it as much.
From Napa, you'll probably just take 80, which gives you easy access to Northstar, Squaw, Incline and many other smaller resorts.
I'm a Heavenly devotee. I like Embassy Suites in South Lake Tahoe. Not exactly ski in/out, but extremely close to the Heavenly gondola. Good location for night life. Good manager's reception w/free drinks each afternoon. Win. Win. Win.

We live about an hour from tahoe. I prefer to ski at Sugar Bowl (more affordable, smaller lines, etc) and from what I understand the lodge at Sugar Bowl is ski-in skin-out.
