And how would you rate it?
It was a fairly good month for me:
The Alchemist's Daughter by Katharine McMahon -- Each time I read a book by Katharine McMahon I wonder why it took me so long to read them, because I enjoy them so much.
SuperChef Australia by Ben Pobjie -- great premise, bad execution. And I hate to say that because the author is one of DH's good friends.
For Love of the Game by Michael Shaara -- I enjoyed the book, but this is one of the occasions where I thought the movie was actually better, even though the movie deviated from the book in some major ways.
The Betrayal of the Blood Lily by Lauren Willig -- this was enjoyable, but I am beginning to get frustrated with the abrupt changes from historical story-line to current time story-line. I wish there was a clear delineation between the story-lines. But definitely worth reading, and I find myself more and more interested in the period when the British were in India.
Dreaming Anastasia by Joy Preble - 2 stars Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence - 2 stars Unwholly by Neal Shusterman - 5 stars Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness - 5 stars
I actually liked Shadow of Night a bit better than A Discovery of Witches, much to my surprise and I had been waiting FOREVER for Unwholly so I was glad it didn't disappoint.

*** The Lucky One - Nicholas Sparks ... typical Sparks, quick read but I liked it. ***** Beautiful Creatures - Kami Garcia ... YA that's going to be a movie next year (I'm a sucker for those) but I REALLY liked it. ***** Call the Midwife - Jennifer Worth ... I love a memoir and this was really insightful **Instant English literature - Rosemary Gelshenen ... blah ***Is Everyone Hanging out Without Me - Mindy Kaling ... Entertaining ** Julie & Julia -Julie Powell ... I couldn't STAND Julie
** Julie & Julia -Julie Powell ... I couldn't STAND Julie
I could not stand Julie either. I saw the movie first, and was very disappointed with the lack of Julia in the book. In truth, I was very disappointed with the book as a whole.
Could I be so bold as to ask why you gave The Women one star? I had read T.C. Boyle's The Road to Wellville and was fully prepared to never read another one of his books. But then I found The Women and am ready to give him another chance. I enjoyed The Women in as much as I despised The Road to Wellville.
** Julie & Julia -Julie Powell ... I couldn't STAND Julie

I made the mistake of reading Julie Powell's second memoir, Cleaving. My god, she's an insufferable twat. She also had some blog post after the movie came out whining about how they didn't show her as she really is (or something like that). I just wanted to smack her and tell her that she should thank her lucky stars they didn't.
As for The Women, I just thought all of the characters were really unlikable, (except for Kitty, and she was barely in it). Most especially Miriam, and it seemed like she took up the bulk of the book. I also thought adding in the Japanese narrator was a really weird choice, and it just didn't work for me. I slogged through it, and I was really disappointed by it all. I've read a few of his short stories and really liked them, but this was just not my cup of tea at all.
Jenna's Cowboy - 3 The Haven - 3 Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light - 4 Gone Girl - 5 Sue Ellen's Girl Ain't Fat, She Just Weighs Heavy - 4 Casting Spells - 4 Highland Blessings - 1

If you haven't read it yet, I would recommend reading My Life in France by Julia Child. It is a much better read
