FI just have me a choice of 6months of crossfit or new earrings amd of course I picked crossfit I'm so excited and nervous at the same time. Is there anything I should know before I start? and what kind of shoes do I need?
Just go into it with an open mind & don't quit. It's easy to get intimidated & think you can't do something buy just remember that everything is scale-able. As far as shoes that really depends on the person. I started with my tennis shoes I had at home but then got Vibrams about a month in after trying out a few different low-profile shoes.
Yay, I'm excited for you, I hope you have as much fun as I do! Don't be nervous, there's no reason to be intimidated, and most Crossfitters seem to be super friendly and supportive. For shoes, ideally you'll want something low-profile or barefoot-style shoes (like Vibram five-fingers). This is because there tends to be weight-lifting in Crossfit and cushiony shoes don't do you any favors lifting weights. However, I've never had a pair of proper lifting shoes, I've always lifted weights (in Crossfit and before in other training) in my old running shoes. So it's not the end of the world if you don't have the right shoes. Some of the people in my box change into their fancy lifting shoes when we get serious about weights and change back into different shoes for other parts of the workout. It's kind of personal preference and how serious you want to be about it. There's often a small amount of running involved at Crossfit, we usually do a 400m run as part of the warmup, so if you're trying new shoes, especially barefoot-style shoes, be careful running in them. Barefoot shoes require a different stride than regular padded running shoes and you can hurt your heels if you strike heel-first in shoes with no padding. I'm not used to running my Vibrams yet.
Good choice! Don't be nervous, just relax and enjoy. Everything is scale-able and the trainers will likely give you extra attention to ensure you're doing everything correctly since you're new.
As far as shoes, I'd just wear whatever you normally wear to work out in the beginning. Once you get a feel for the type of workouts you're doing, you'll have a better idea of what you need. Flat soles are best, but we do a decent amount of running at my box and I wouldn't be comfortable in vibram-style shoes. Right now I have a pair of Nike's that keep my feet pretty level and they are working just fine.
You can always ask your gym's trainers for their recommendations, too.
If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. - Bruce Lee
That's great! I wish they offered it near me, I would totally sign up.
On a related note, did anyone watch the Crossfit Championships on ESPN this past Saturday? Holy crap, those women competing were seriously amazing, I can't imagine doing some of the stuff that they had to do. I was in total awe. It did motivate me to go workout though, so that was good!
