my husband had been complainig about his ear for several months (he was saying it sounded like he was underwater). he went to an ENT guy months ago and he gave him meds and told him to sort of see if the meds worked....
Well last night my husband woke up in the middle of the night and said that he could not hear anything from his right ear. He was telling me how scared he was and that he knew something was not right.
His ENT dr squeezed him in and he did a hearing test that my husband failed :-( The dr put him on steriods but is not confident that it will help at all.
He also mentioned drilling a hole in the eardrum but that only works 50% of the time.
My husband is really freaking out and I feel terrible for him
I lost the hearing suddenly in my right ear when I was in 5th grade, due to a virus. I'm about 80% deaf in that ear. They did a CT scan to make sure there wasn't a brain tumor or anything like that causing it - not trying to worry you with this info, I'm sure your H doesn't have one either! But thought I'd let you know they may want to check it out. But I didn't have any pain or anything leading up to it - I just got nauseous and threw up at school. When my mom called me at home to check up on me, I couldn't hear her when I held the phone up to my right ear - that's how I figured out something was wrong. I was sick b/c my equilibrium was all off.
My left ear compensates a bit for the right, but for the most part, I've just adapted to it. My friends know that I like to sit on the right side of them or right side of the table so I can hear better, I've warned my coworkers that if they talk to me and I ignore them it's probably b/c I can't hear them.
I hope everything is okay with your H, I remember being very scared, too. Keep us posted.

Has he had an MRI or CT scan? My friends husband had this, and it turned out to be an acoustic neuroma- a small tumor around the nerve to the ear. He had it removed, and unfortunately it messed up his balance and he has a slight facial droop on that side.... Hope your husband is doing OK!!
