I love the 2nd one so much more. even how it looks from the outside.
the first one - all that wainscotting and beadboard - I have that in my house and HATE it. I hate having all that wood and cannot wait for the day when I can redo all the walls. sadly that day may be a long time coming....
I think #2 is way uglier than #1. Niether are my taste, but I could live with the kitchen and bathrooms in #1. I'd have to redo the kitchen and bathrooms in #2 right away.
Vanilla's first house is much better looking than all others. But that's not helpful
I just saw stats & outside. I'd pick #1...neither is beautiful but #2 is horrible to me & reminds me of the crap stucco & EIFS boxes that popped up all over Vegas when I lived there.
I am going to assume that the reason there's more sq footage for the first house is because they are including the basement and house #2 is not. House #2 says it's a daylight basement, so I'm going to assume it's walkout but not yet finished. Correct me if I am wrong there.
A daylight basement is not a walkout - just a normal basement with bigger windows. It's usually a slanted lot, allowing for full-sized windows across the back rather than just egress or small/traditional basement windows. A true walkout would be just that - a full walkout with doors out to the backyard.

Without the cub scout dad, I'd have said #1. I hate that oak trim, but you can get rid of that. It's much more open, and the layout looks better.
Both houses have kitchens and bathrooms that need to be renovated (although it looks like the master bath in #1 is gorgeous), so if you're doing that any way, you can live with the 80's-tastic details for awhile until you can afford to redo them.
