I got a much lower quote for home and auto, and I'm ready to switch everything over. Well, unless anyone has a really good anecdote to convince me that they're the devil.
Let me hear the good, the bad, and the ugly about Allstate!
We've had Allstate homeowners for 9 years and auto for only about a year. We've had one auto claim and one homeowners claim and aside from being really slow on the homeowners claim, we have no real complaints.
We dropped Allstate at our last home after they jacked up our rates by about $500 following a hurricane. We were not right on the Gulf Coast, about 40 miles and we never had a claim.
We've had allstate for 10 years +. Dh has totaled a few cars, had multiple other accidents, an apartment fire (total loss), a lost engagement ring and a few homeowners claims (new roof). We've only had one time that we were less than 100% satisfied (basically I needed a rental car for over a month and they didn't cover it for that long...but normally a car doesn't take that long to be repaired either so not totally their fault). Our experience with them has been very good overall and we've dealt with them a lot. (:
We currently have Allstate for auto insurance. We have had them for a little over a year but haven't had to actually use them.
They were WAY cheaper for homeowner's insurance when we owned our home, like only half of the cost as everyone else, and we were so skeptical that we ended up going with someone else. We probably priced out 4-5 companies and everyone was in the same price range except for them. It was weird.

I don't have allstate but had to come in just to say that I know the guy who is the voice of the commercials. the deeeeeeeep voice. He's one cool dude.
We had Allstate for about 5 years for home and auto. I knew our rates were on the high side, but we were lazy about switching. When I finally looked into it a few months ago, I discovered we were getting totally hosed. I got quotes from a half dozen other companies and their identical auto coverage came in at 1/3 the price of Allstate. Our agent said the only way he could lower our rates was to raise our deductible. We wound up going with Liberty Mutual, which was the company DH was with before we got married and bought a house. The homeowners policy was slightly higher than our Allstate policy, but we still wound up saving like $1000/year by switching.
I used to have them. I didn't have a great experience when I had to file a claim. My agent acted annoyed and they tried to argue what needed repaired. After that experience I started shopping around and realized I could get the same coverage for a lot cheaper with other companies.
Thanks everyone. I live in a landlocked state, so fortunately I won't have to deal with their special hurricane handling. Their homeowner's insurance is freakishly cheaper than everyone else's (like $500-$1000 cheaper), so I'll give them a try.

How do you know him? DETAILS!
Dennis Haysbert. He's also the Jamaican baseball player who wants to sacrifice a chicken on Major League. Love him. Love his voice.
Dean Winters as Mayhem is my favorite character ever. He's also a really cool dude who did a sit-down at corporate and he is hilarious.
we've had them for years- auto, home owners and a small policy on my ring, our agent is great and we've never had an issue. I've had two claims with them (smaller, auto claims) and never had my rates go up and had great service.
My husband works for Allstate. Honestly, you can have a good agent or a bad one. I recommend any bricks and mortar agency where you can build a relationship with a real live person. All Insurance Agents are paid commission, that might motivate some of them to give you less than optimal coverage to get you a low rate to get your business. You need a professional who understands the real value of your home and possessions. We (obviously) use Allstate and have been very happy with our home and auto coverage even when we have to make claims.
