I think my cat's tail is broken. I was holding her and touched her tail...she freaked out on me. After I coaxed her out from under the bed, I looked at the tail, I noticed it doesn't look straight and is swollen. I'm taking her to the vet first thing in the morning, but I'm just so freaked out...I've never had a pet with a broken bone (except a stray I found and took to a non-kill shelter when I couldn't keep her at the apartment I was in).
I also feel terrible that I didn't notice sooner nor do I know how it happened. I should have noticed something was off yesterday when she hissed and swiped at one of the younger cats, which is pretty unusual, but not something that raised concern. Ugh. Poor baby.

Poor thing! I've never had a cat with a broken tail, but our rescue had a greyhound who lost his tail earlier this year in a freak fall (he sort of fell backwards right onto his butt, and broke his tail near the base). I hope she's OK, and that the vet can fix it up. And if not...my parents' cat lost her tail to a tumor and she was adorable as a bobtail!

We've suspected a broken tail before...they could never find anything wrong and it cleared up after about 6 months. If I remember correctly, a broken tail itself is pretty uncommon. Vertabrea issues are more common and I think they normally do pain meds and see if they resolve on their own. It could also be an abscess if she somehow cut it or hurt it and fluid has built up.
Good luck! Also don't feel bad, it is a really common injury.

It may have cost me $150 but I am relieved to know Lynx's tail isn't fractured, just bent. The vet gave me pain meds for her and told me her tail should heal over time. I just hate seeing her in so much pain

Thanks for the update, I'm glad it isn't broken! Hoping Lynx has a fast recovery

Thank you! She HATES the medicine...I have to inject it into her mouth...it's been fun lol
Gah, I HATE HATE HATE broken tails... we have a female doberman with the full tail, and I can see why they dock the breed young normally. Its whip thin, and every emotion she has goes straight into it. She's broken and rebroken it, as well as everything else in its path of destruction. It's cost us well over $1000 at this point, for check up and pain meds.
My next dogs going to be a corgi... no tail to break. XD
