I am up way early with the puppy. Our Prom was last night and pictures are showing up on FB. Sweet santa christ am I happy I do not have a daughter. By the way things are going girls will be going to prom in bikinis in a few years. Bra tops with low on the hip skirts... Sends out a great message. Apparently they are now teaching street walker 101 in school.
A newssite that's local is running prom photos of pretty much every high school in the state. This is ghastly -- the guys are worse than the girls -- you do not wear sneaks with a tux and you do not wear baseball caps or those shitty shitty bowler hats with a tux.
The only hat that's acceptable is a top hat but that's with tails and for a very very formal affair. Or so the rule used to go.
What's popular for girls: those formal gowns with a hi-low skirt. It looks like a piece of fabric is cut out of the front --- the look is trashy rather than cutting edge and trendy. Ugh.
(what would be a useful thing: the part of the gown with the longer piece of material: made detachable, like a bridal train can be. This way you'll have 2 dresses: the one with the hilo skirt and one with a short skirt)
I can't figure out what the attraction for these horrible gowns are. Nobody wants to look elegant and nobody wants to look classy. (and nobody wants to be comfortable ---

I don't mind the guys who wear funny hats or casual shoes (or even flip-flops). I mean, it's prom; it's not as if it's something super serious and respectable. If they want to have fun with it, I think that's what it's all about.
The skanks are another story entirely, and that gets worse every year. It's disgusting.
My niece's prom dress was very similar to this dress. it was strapless, and the jewels on top were bigger. But looking through the pictures on her facebook, she had one of the more modest dresses there. The rest of the girls in her group were either in skankwear or something that was sooooo OTT.
I do have to hand it to my sister, she's somehow managed to instill decent taste and modesty into all three of her kids, which isn't always easy, I'm guessing.

I agree. It's tough to find way to express your personality in a suit.

I made a post like this on another board last week. Between the orange tans and the ass-showing dresses, you'd think my hometown was in Jersey. I must apparently be old, because I was appalled at how skanky these girls look.
And a lot of these girls, even the ones that aren't carrying around more than a few pounds, are in dresses that are simply too small in size. You can see where it's cutting in and puckering. Less is always more.

I would like to say that this is a new trend but unfortunately my sil to be wore a dress to her prom that barely covered her boobs and the slit up the front pretty much gave away the good underneath. this was a good 5ish years ago too.

My senior prom was in 2003 and there was more than one girl in a belly bearing dress, skirt and bra top style. They looked like belly dancers.

My senior prom was in 2004, and a lot of girls wore the dresses where the bottom was all shredded. My friends called them "seaweed" dresses. They were pretty trashy looking, but I went to a Catholic school so that bra top shit would not have happened. The nuns made it clear that if you showed up to prom looking like a ho, you'd be sent home. I know those skanky dresses were getting popular, but there weren't any at my prom.
