J has managed to pick up a GI bug. We are on day 4 of diarrhea. This has lead to an angry diaper rash, which in turn, has lead to a rip roarin' yeast infection. It's angry angry red, has satellite lesions and it just a mess. We have an anti-fungal ointment we got yesterday from the dr, but I swear it looks even worse today.
J starts crying as soon as he soils his diaper because he knows I have to change him. He wails, turns red, has tears running down his cheeks and is a sweaty mess throughout the diaper change and ointment application. By the time I pick him up and soothe him, he's burning up, sweaty and hoarse. Rinse and repeat 8+ times a day.
Anyone have any experience with this? Anything I can do to make him more comfortable? I'm about to crack having to listen to this poor kid just wail multiple times a day. It's breaking my heart.

Poor little guy! We just got got over a yeast diaper rash too. What cream are you using? We were using Nystatin 4x/day & regular diaper cream at all other changes. Desitin did not seem to help at all. Butt Paste was better. Angel Baby Bottom Balm also helped.
Bare butt time is good if you can do it, although it might be hard with diarrhea. M seemed to like cool baths too. Hugs mama!
We put a gauze pad with mylanta on the sore areas inside his diaper for awhile. It really helped neutralize the acid from the diarrhea. I was a little skeptical when my neighbor told me about it but it worked.
We have nystatin and she said to use it for every diaper change. I think if I was just using the ointment it would be fine, but I have to keep dabbing off the diarrhea first, which I know irritates him even more. We are in a vicious circle right now and I just need the diarrhea to clean up so his bottom gets a break. We did some naked time this morning and will do some this afternoon, too.
The mylanta TOTALLY works. Dab it on with a cotton ball and blow it dry. Leave him completely out of diapers as much as possibly, but still put something on the rash (the cream, I mean).

Is he better??
I just thought I'd throw my two cents in there because DD used to get nasty yeasty diaper rashes ALL the time. She'd have blisters and everything. Not having those is the best thing about potty training!
Anyway, I would always slather her bum (like, cover it -- thick like you'd put frosting on a cake) with a mix of Lotrimin AF (or generic clotrimazole -- same thing) and hydrocortizone cream. I'd give her as much diaper free time as possible. And DON'T use regular babywipes -- the alcohol in them burns. I'd use witch hazel wipes by Preparation H -- they were rectangular, like small baby wipes. They still hurt her, but a LOT less. Sometimes I'd use plain water on a towel, but those hurt her also.
When DS had a yeast rash the nurse recommended adding baking soda to the bath. It really did help. She never said an amount, I had a BJ's container some just threw a 1/4-1/2 cup in the tub.
And then let him have some naked time. When you put the diaper back on, put Lotrimin or whatever your Dr prescribed with Desitin on. DS is much better within 24 hours of doing this and his booty was pretty red too.
We also found that baby powder worked the best for her red bum. It is not recommended by doctors due to a risk of aspiration pneumonia, but it really helped Laylas red bum. (obviously you need the medicated cream for sure due to the yeast)
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Sorry it was a post and run - this weekend has been hard. Things were continuing to get worse, so the dr prescribed silvadene cream to help heal the skin. Then yesterday we noticed 2 patches of broken skin, which led to a change in therapy again and another visit to the dr today.
Oh and he's still having diarrhea and soiled diapers in the double digits. :/
Basically we were told that until the diarrhea is done, the rash won't completely clear. I'm in the process of taking stool culture for 3 days (which is about as gross as you can imagine) and trying to do as much naked time as possible - but I'll let you imagine what it's like to do that with a kid that is still in the throws of a GI illness. :/
So yeah. Things are better, kind of. I just really hope we can kick this thing soon, but it's like it just won't die already. Ugh.
My doc recommended these after a course of iv antibiotics. I don't know if they would interfere with the gi stuff though. It worth asking. This stuff worked miracles.
And definitely baking soda baths and lanolin is great for protecting. My doc recommended putting the nyastin on, letting it dry for a minute then covering it with Vaseline or lanolin.
Most expensive diaper cream ever but so worth it! We used to mix together Nystatin, hydrocortisone, some sort of antacid (Mylanta), a usual diaper ointment (A&D or something). We would keep it in the fridge and spray their tush with dermaplast or something like that before putting it on. So sorry - it sucks so much!

Have your tried aquaphor on top of the ointment? It is so thick it acts as a barrier. I would also shower him off with warm water and then sanitizer the tub. I am sorry. It is a horrible cycle.
