My LO will be 8 weeks Thursday. I have a trip to Colorado (two hour flight from here) planned for the weekend. For some reason I thought that her vaccines were scheduled for today, but when I checked my calendar I realized I was a week off and they weren't scheduled until NEXT Monday. So I called the pedi and spoke with the nurse and explained I'd be flying this week and they were able to get me in today. What she did tell me that concerned me is that even if she has the vaccines today she won't be protected from pertussis because the pertussis vaccine takes about 1-2 weeks to kick in.
My trip Thursday is completely refundable but I really want to go because it's the only chance I'll have for a while to visit my close friend who recently moved away. That being said, I don't want to do anythin risky. Would you still go knowing that your baby may not be 100% protected from pertussis?
What's weird is that I swear I flew with my son within the week of his 8 week immunizations and the pedi never mentioned anything about not being protected from pertussis.
I would go and just shield the baby as much as possible (and obviously keep her away from anyone who is coughing on the plane). If you are vaccinated and nursing, I would think the baby would still be getting some immunity from you.
