We keep one stashed around the house. Last winter we had an ice storm that caused a power dip and took out our furnace, cable and phone lines. We had been using a phone book as a riser for our bikes and were able to get a HVAC company number and call out on our cell phone. Smart phones don't get a strong enough signal to work at our house, so that was out as well.
Interesting, I just realized I can't remember the last time we got one. Maybe they don't deliver them to our apt.
In my building, they get put in big stacks by the mail areas, nobody takes them, and then a week later they're gone because the porters recycle them. Definitely a complete waste.

We keep one around too, for the same reasons -- they don't crash or rely on electricity or an internet signal.
I never knew this! Thanks for sharing. Right now we have one propping up the corner of our bed frame, since the wheel broke. But that's the only thing I have used a phone book for in a long time.

They don't even make it inside my house most of the time. I need to wear one pair of glasses and use a second pair of glasses as a magnifying glass in order to read them. I like the fire kindling idea, though.
And that opt out totally works. I was skeptical because I've seen the big vans that park at the end of the street going door to door with phone books. But one day I got a flyer on my door instead of a book. It said "You have opted out of receiving a phone book. If this was a mistake or if you'd like to start receiving it again, go to www......" I was pleasantly surprised and haven't gotten a phone book since.

Opting out doesn't work with our apartment complex. They dump one in front of every complex. I leave it outside until I have enough free hands to carry it down to the recycling bin.
