Don't do it. The traffic is horrible commuting. And it's really kind a sucky place to live. Lots of families, suburb style lifestyle. Also I'm pretty sure if you work in Oregon you have to pay the income tax even if you live in Washington. But I could be wrong on that.
I mean it is not a cool place to live...like maybe it's just a lame suburb or not safe? I don't know anything about the area
It depends on where you are looking, I'm sure. It probably varies from Vancouver to La Center to whatever. It's definitely suburban, some areas kind of rural. Soooo I guess it's lame?
Oh wait, I just see that you could work anywhere. Hmmm for $600 it might be worth it, but it is totally a different atmosphere and it would be a pretty pricey cab ride if you went out in Portland, etc.
I guess I will need to go and check it out sometime. I am probably going to Portland for Thanksgiving!! So I will check out the area then and see if it makes sense. One of my friends lives in the SE area and another is going to live in Wilsonville so quite spread out.
Portland is much more expensive than Boise! for me to have a comparable place in Portland to what I have now it would be way more expensive so the extra money would be nice to have I guess
Yea Portland isn't like super cheap, but I've found some pretty affordable stuff on craigslist. But if you live in one of the well connected areas you end up saving a lot because you aren't driving or really even cabbing it anywhere. Honestly I think Vancouver is sort of miserable (and crazy conservative) and you'll end up spending a lot of time/money coming into Portland. Plus you have to factor in the sales tax in Washington.
Definitely check it out, but from what I know about you here, I just don't think it will make you super happy in Vancouver.

Yep, our sales tax is nuts, and maybe going up soon. If it does we'll be at 10.1%! For me, it would be worth it, cuz I don't go to downtown areas that much, I live on the boarder of the suburbs and the rural area, so I'd rather do my shopping in Oregon and live in WA. But if you are going to be going out on the town a lot, Oregon might make more sense!
Wow, I've never lived anywhere where you could just get around on a bike. Sounds nice!
It is actually a nice place to live... there is a mountain you can go skiing / biking at like 25-30 minutes away and downtown is about a 10 minute bike ride from my house. There is another little neighborhood street with bars/restaurants like 5 min bike ride away.
We call it a fairy tale land because riding bikes around town in is like being in a movie... There are big beautiful trees, really nice old homes with big porches, little kids selling lemonade, basically no crime and everyone is really friendly..lol. lately when we are riding back home at like midnight and there was a couple that would always be practicing guitar and singing songs outside our apartment complex and we would stop and listen to them
But it has it' issues... not many well paying jobs, poor education system, etc.

I totally agree. Even if you work at home, that seperates you even MORE from the city. IF you live/work in the "Couv", it's not really worth moving IMO. I just moved to the city after living in BEaverton (the suburbs) and that was hard enough being "away" from the city life since I'm young and single. I don't even live in the hustle and bustle part of hte city but I'm SO glad I live closer to all the wonderful things about Portland (close to downtown, able to walk to so many things, close to the river, etc.)
I wouldn't move to Vancouver at.all as a young single person.
and there are GREAT areas where you can bike/walk everywhere. I live in a wonderful picture-esque part of town where sometimes it does feel like a movie set! It's not the "super hip" part of town but I adore it.

I was just thinking of this! Red's area would be perfect for you. Honestly the places you were looking at this weekend I would never really consider moving to.
What areas of the city did you guys visit? Did you go to Northwest, downtown or the pearl at all?
When I come for Thanksgiving I will be able to explore the neighborhoods more that I would be living in.. which I want to be walkable, bikeable and apparently not in Vancouver..lol.
Well this explains EVERYTHING about why you would even consider Vancouver:) Portland isn't nicknamed Bike Town, USA for nothing. It's core areas are crazy bikeable, walkable and amazing. Yes come back and explore at Thanksgiving!

I am planning to! Will you be in town that weekend?
