DH will have training in Atlanta in December (right before christmas). We've decided I will most likely go with him. Where is the best place for us to look for a hotel since I probably won't rent a car as well, and would prefer to just sight see while on my own during the day? He doesn't mind using the rental car to get to his training (ie - he doesn't care which part of Atlanta we stay).
I haven't been to Atlanta since I was 11, so I don't really remember too much of the area at all! Thanks!
Buckhead if you want to shop. Lenox Mall is great! If not, Midtown. Both neighborhoods are on the Marta line, so you can get around if you want to explore on your own.
Post as your trip gets closer and I'll give you restaurant recs!
I am biased and always recommend Midtown area. It is easy to take the MARTA from Midtown, especially if you stay at the W Hotel or Loews. You can also stay in Buckhead and there are a bunch of hotels near that MARTA station.
I am not sure what you can do during the day in December, but the GA Aquarium and Coca Cola Museum is downtown. I think the Botanical Gardens will be really pretty that time of year too.
I also always recommend midtown. You can easily hop onto Marta to go to the mall or downtown, etc. In December Atlantic station will be nicely decorated as will the botanical gardens, and both are in midtown. I have friends that have walked from midtown to the aquarium and world of coke, it just depends on where your hotel is. Short cab ride regardless.
I would say Midtown too, you can take Marta to shopping, Coke Museum, Aquarium, CNN Center, etc, the High is there, Botanical Gardens/Piedmont Park aren't far. Atlanta History Center is nice, but you would need to taxi there probably. Walk around Virginia Highlands for cute boutiques.

Just a tip, Atlanta if very easy to priceline. Both Buckhead and midtown are well defined on the "areas" maps. We have stayed at some awesome places for $70-80 per night that way.
