This is probably a stupid question, but how does the transition from baby to toddler sizes work? DS is 7 months but HUGE, his 18m clothes fit perfectly right now. I want to get him a winter coat that will fit for a few months, should I go for 24m or 1T or 2T? Is that how the sizes work? 24m < 1T < 2T ? Thanks!
I have never heard of a 1T. 24 months and 2T are usually very similar, IME. 24 months is sometimes a little shorter. If you want the next size up from 18 months, buy a 24 month or 2T (some brands only make one or the other).

I have also never seen a 1T. 2T sounds big for 23 lbs, 27 inches. DD is 21.5 lbs and 30.5 inches and wears 12 or 18 month clothes right now. Some of her 12 month things are getting too small, but other 12 month stuff still fits fine. Some 18 month stuff is a little big. I think she would be swimming in 2T at this point. Can you take him with you when you go shopping and have him try on the jacket before you buy it?
I wouldn't buy larger than 24 months. I wouldn't go too big, because his growth will probably slow down pretty soon. For reference, my daughter was wearing 18 month clothes at 7 months, and is still in 18 months at 14 months. My son was able to wear his 24 month coat during his first and second winters. They change a lot less once they hit a year.
I agree that a 2T sounds big given his measurements and also that his growth will start to slow soon. I would probably just try to find an 18 month fleece that runs big.
i'd get him 18-24mo... 2T will likely be too big, it's usually a little bigger than 24mo.
2 of my boys were always at least double their age in size. (ie- at 6mo, wearing 12mo, at 12mo, wearing 24mo/2t, etc) Don't worry - it slows down after 1yo. Around 1yo is when they started to wear a size for almost a year... and still do (always about year ahead - Griffin is 5.5 and in size 7 now, Gibby is 3 and in 4T, etc).
my other twin is my peanut- and in smaller sizes often b/c he's thin- making everything extra difficult for me with clothing change outs at the end of a season, etc
Layla is 11 mths and is 24 lbs. I dont remember her height but she is 90th %ile. She was wearing some 12 mths at 6mths but still fits in 12 mths now and is just transitioning to 18 mths. Her coat that just fits is actually 9mths. I think if I was you, I would go for 18 mths or be prepared to try on. Kids like to have their hands available especially when they are having sippy cups, snacks, etc. and if it bunches up, it can bunch up at the neck. Annoying.
What brands are you buying? M is a similar weight & a little taller, he is currently wearing 12m in Carters brand.
I got him an 18mo Columbia fleece for this winter.
He was 23 lbs 27" at his 6 month pedi appt, so he may be even bigger by now. He has another appointment for shots tomorrow, I'll ask them to weigh and measure him. We have mostly Carter's brand. 12m is definitely too small, 18m fits just perfect. I'm concerned that he'll grow out of the 24m before the end of the winter. He seems to just be flying through clothes.

I've never seen a 1T. I couldn't tell a huge difference between 24 months and 2T. 2T is sometimes cut slightly longer and leaner, but when DD was in that size I usually swapped them out without noticing a difference. Except for Carters. I thought their 24 months was shorter than the other brands although that might work out well for a child that is more solid than just tall.
In my experience 24M and 2T are almost the same and I think some companies have dropped having both. I would look at the charts from each brand. Gap and Carters are pretty clear on their sites about the sizing.
FWIW -- my first born was huge and wearing 2T or so around her first birthday. In winter I just hem her pants so we can get waits that fit. She's in 5T/5/XS now and she's almost 3. We have a mix of 2T and 24M for my son for winter. He's 14 months now. The pants are all too long the waists work pretty well. I love summer clothing. No one cares if your shorts are too long.

DS is almost 17 months and at his 15-month checkup was 26lbs and 33.5in. He is a tall one, after his dad. He still fits in some 18m stuff. For shirts and onesies he currently wears 24m stuff. For pants most 18m size still fit him. I just bought him a 2T winter jacket.
2T it seems bigger than 24m to me and they seem to stop making onesies at 24m, so DD is in 24m now although she does have some 2T pants and shirts it is not such a big difference. I am lucky in that DD wears her age, she will be 2 in a month and can still wear some 18-24m stuff. It makes it easy to shop for her for us and other people.

It's kind of hard to judge...they grow really fast at first and then it slows down dramatically. DS is just now outgrowing his 3T stuff (he's 4 in December) but then he was through 18 m stuff in like three months. I would go with 24 mos. for this winter or 2T.
Best thing is to try on. DS is slim, so even nowthat he needs the length of 4T pants they are falling off his waist. I think he could stay in 3T shirts for another year if needed. For coats I would worry that a bigger size might cover his hands if they don't have elastic cuffs.

children's place slim sizes - I swear by them (they start at 4). even if they are a little big at the waist, because they are slim they don't look so ridiculous when you tighten down the adjustable waist.
