Ugh. K likes to watch the dog next door through the cracks in our fence. He decided to stick his hand through a large knot hole and got bitten. This dog is big, some large mix. By the time I got to him, his hand was covered with blood and he was screaming bloody murder.
I washed his hand with soap and water. I didn't find any teeth punctures but he for sure has a tooth mark that is in the middle of a finger and is bruised and swollen. All the blood came from a torn cuticle that I think occurred when he pulled his hand back through the fence. He is using his hand just fine and stopped crying when I offered him a sucker.
I'm torn on calling animal control because it wasn't really the dogs fault. Ugh. I can handle any other medical emergencies except on my own children! I'm waiting to see if I should take K into the doctor, right now he seems ok.

I wouldn't report it. I would maybe approach the neighbors just to make sure the dog is up to date on his shots. (again, letting them know you know it wasn't the dog's fault) And I'd put something over the hole in the fence just to make sure it can't happen again.

Ok this is what I planned on anyway. Unfortunately if the nurse on call wants me to take him in to get a tetanus shot, then reporting it will be out of my hands and I will feel bad about it

Don't feel bad. If I were your neighbor I'd understand if it was reported automatically because you had to bring him in to get it checked out. Sorry he has to go through that

I believe how it works is a dog must be reported and found to be a dangerous dog (not sure if this fits the criteria) and then if a second incident happens the owners can be charged b/c they are now on notice. Although I can't image how this could be considered the dog or owner's fault.
Sorry didn't mean to be short in my response, I'm on my phone. :-(
I meant that I wouldn't report it because the dog was in his own yard. I would go next door and talk with your neighbor. Will they be okay with you talking to them? Or are they kind of ass neighbors?

I know this isn't the first incident
If you know this dog is hyper-protective of his yard, wouldn't it have been prudent to cover any holes or put up something to keep the kids away from the fence (if they can't listen), or watch them when they are out there?

Hindsight is 20/20. I actually never noticed that there was a hole big enough for K's hand. Oh, and I do watch my kids, thanks

Dang girl. That's a little judgey. It could have happened to anyone. Kids get hurt even under the most hellicopter of parents
I'm sorry, it wasn't meant to be. If I knew the dogs next door have bit someone before, I wouldn't let my kids near their fence, and would probably put up my own fence or plants if its a shared fence. No one else would do that?

Why would I put up a second fence if the shared fence was sturdy enough? ( again, didn't know there was a big enough knot hole) The fence is 7' high and sturdy enough to contain the dog. Maybe I should just put up a zombie apocalypse fence around my quarter acre lot to be sure of every danger possible.
