Hi! I'm new here, usually hang out on international living, and recently started TTC #1.
I'm wondering what your opinion is on meds while TTC. I know a lot of people 'drink 'til it's pink', and for now that's what I'm planning to do. I'm wondering though, does that -in your opinion- work the same way with meds? I occasionally use antihistamines and muscle relaxers (when my allergies go crazy/when my restless leg syndrome drives me nuts), and both say to discuss use with your physician if you are pregnant, so they're not 100 percent safe during pregnancy.
What do you think? Is it okay to make my life tolerable while TTC, or should I give those up before it turns pink?
I'm also trying to figure out what to do about prenatal vitamins, as I just realized that my standard female multiple has 15.000 IU of Vitamin A, which is/would be BAD. Any suggestions there are very welcome as well.
(I realize I should ask my physician, but I haven't had the chance to make an appointment yet.)
Hello, I'm a grad, but it's slow today so I'll tell you what i did/would do.
I would stick with my normal meds until I'm given a reason not to. You don't share a blood supply with baby until 6 weeks so there is a lot of protection in that (from what I understand). A lot of antihisthamines are perfectly safe when pregnant, but the drug boxes themselves say to check with your doctor just to cover their butts.
I gave up drinking before TTC, but only for weight-loss reasons. If I'd still been drinking I would have been in the drink-till-it's-pink club.
As for prenatals, I take the Target generic gummy vitamins as the pill form made my morning sickness horrific (which is not uncommon).
Lastly, if the only reason you're making an appointment with your doc is for pre-conception purposes, skip it. It's not really necessary (unless you have other medical issues) so save your money!

I don't know about the muscle relaxers. I take Zyrtec daily, and my midwife told me to keep taking it - there is some risk, but it's very small. And not being able to breathe due to allergies outweighs that risk. You will want to take a prenatal multivitamin, though. The One-A-Days made me unbearably nauseous, so now I take the Walmart brand ones.

Though I am also a newbie, my doc did not say to do anything except take pre-natals and she suggested I cut out wine/coffee. At least during O. These ladies have convinced me not to deprive myself of the wine and coffee til I have to, however, and I do see some wisdom in that. This journey could take longer then we think (hope not) but if it does, I know I'll want a drink!
Thanks you all! I'll find myself a good pre-natal and will medicate until it's pink (pop til it's pink??) I'm all sorts of relieved (mostly my nose tho).

::waves at NL:: Hi! Great to see you over here! Of course I read and answered your post on IL before coming here and seeing this one, so read my IL response with that in mind :-)
I agree with everyone that of course you should talk to your dr, but I personally take my medication until I get a BFP (or at least until after O). Mine aren't specifically contraindicated during pregnancy (I take an allergy medicine and then one for preventing UTIs), so I feel like it wouldn't be a huge deal if I got pregnant with traces of them still in my system. If I were taking something that was contraindicated, though, then I might feel less comfortable doing it. If I didn't take my allergy medicine at this time of year, I would be so miserable that there would probably be no sex anyway, and hence no baby.
And welcome! I hope your stay here is nice and short!!
BFP1: DD born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP
BFP2: 3/18/12, blighted ovum, natural m/c @ 7w4d

Hey crimson! Yep, despite the fact that everyone here seems perfectly lovely, I sure do hope I won't be hanging out here for too long.
Again thanks everyone for the advice/opinions. I'll definitely keep using my allergy medicin - the muscle relaxers I use sporadically anyway, so they shouldn't pose too much of a problem and when/if I get a BFP, I'll ask my doc for a safe one. Otherwise, until the next time I actually need to go to my doctor, I'll just continue as I have been.
I guess this whole finally start trying thing has just made me a slight bit obsessed.....
