I requested vacation for December 3 weeks ago. My boss told me that he was going to give everyone 2 weeks to put in their requests then he would look at all of them, but he would give mine priority since I was first. The 2 week window ended on Friday.
I emailed him Friday asking him to review my request as I need to purchase airline tickets ASAP for the holiday time. He wasn't here Friday, but should have received my email Monday.
Now it is Tuesday, and I haven't heard anything. Do I email him again? I don't want to pester him, but he had 5 requests total to look at.
I'm going to end up spending $$$$$$ on flights this year. UPDATE: my boss ended up walking by and acted like "duh of course you can go." Well, at least now I know.
I would ask again. Is there a way you can ask in person rather than through e-mail? Maybe if you're standing in front of him in the office he will take a minute to look.
I would ask again. I submitted a request last week for Friday off next week and I didn't get a notice that it was approved. Turns out it was a internal process issue and he approved it the very day that I requested it. He was a little peeved that I was waiting on the approval. But that is a completely different issue.
I would ask again. I have this issue all the time and I ask for time off 6 to 12 months ahead of time. My boss who did approve my time came back at me last week that he never approved my time at the end of the month and expects me to be on call. Mind u within the 6 months I asked him ago, I have booked everything. So who knows if I will have a job when I come back, I am not rescheduling like last time.
Since the two-week window only ended Friday, I don't think he's necessarily dragging his feet. But since you put your request in before that, I'm sure it feels that way for you - and rightly so! Given that, I agree with the suggestion to ask again, preferably in person. I think that would make it easier to give the reminder the right tone and all that jazz.

I wonder if your issue is that you're asking way too far ahead of time? I would never expect a boss to remember that s/he approved time that far ahead of time.
Thanks ladies. I'll call him this afternoon. I'm just frustrated because there was never an approval process before. If you asked for it off, you got it. We are located on the same campus but in different buildings, so going to see him isn't that easy.

Maybe, but its required for my job so its not something that is new or anything. All vacation requests are put on the production calendar. They actually asked us the other day to start putting in our time requests for the first half of 2013.
