I think we had this conversation a few months ago....and someone (PIP maybe?) said they kept wasp spray by the bed. I find this terribly clever!!
My friend told me she used to keep a butcher knife on her night stand. This makes me giggle because do you realize how close you'd have to be to an intruder in order to do some damage?
Currently, I have nothing....I check all the doors every night and the windows that are climb-in-able are shut and locked at night.
I thought about getting a hearing dog but decided against it as it just might be too much work for me. I have a very curious 2 year old that likes to get into everything so I can't leave stuff around that could harm him. Self defence classes will help me since I wouldn't need a weapon.
i have a handgun that's loaded in my night stand, DH has 2 in his. my pump action shot gun and rifle in the closet in the bed room (rifle is there because we ran out of room in the gun case when DH got his over under shot gun and my dad sent out my bird hunting one)
the dog would be the early warning detection device, if the cat wasn't kept in her room at night during the winter she'd probably trip them up so bad and then devour their face...she is total attack cat.
Nothing more than my cell phone. I'm vehemently anti gun, so that's out. I'm a heavy sleeper, so a knife or bat near the bed would be useless, and most likely used against me.
I don't get hung up on this stuff. The chances are slim, I live in a safe neighborhood, and my doors have dead bolts. That's all I need for peace of mind.
My cell phone is always right next to my bed. I also always double check my doors and windows. I live on a ground apartment alone. I never thought much about it when I lived in my house because I felt safe there. I have been thinking about it more often now in my apartment.

I live in a very safe neighborhood, thankfully, and with a roommate. I have my cell phone and a small knife, but the knife is buried in the drawer of my nightstand, so it's not really a practical option. BF usually carries, so when he's at my house, there's a handgun nearby. I pity the intruder that breaks into his house, where the rest of his guns are.
I need to apply for my concealed carry permit and get a gun. I have one or two picked out that I like (one more practical than the other), but I haven't bought one yet.

I sleep alone every 3rd day (FF works 24 hours on, has 48 hours off) and on those nights I have my key fob on my nightstand so I can hit the panic button if I need to. I also double check all the windows are locked, since our house is a ranch. There’s a bat behind our door and I know FF has a gun (locked and unloaded with ammo in another area) on his side of the bed but I don’t mess with that.
My dog also has a pretty mean growl/bark, even though she’s really a big sissy.
Nothing. Seriously, chances are the intruder will grab my weapon and use it against me. Or I might use my weapon against someone innocent (some guy recently killed his son that way). I don't live in fear and I use common sense. I lock my doors/windows, make sure my windows have window treatments so that someone cannot see who or what is inside...

I just never worry about it. I live in a safe neighborhood but I figure what will be will be. I will deal with what ever happens if it was to happen. I worry more about fire then intruder. I do have an exit plan in case of fire.
I don't really worry about it. I live on the third floor so I figure if someone were to break it they would do it on a lower floor! I have a maglite flashlight but that's it. I'd like a gun but I am too chicken.
I have nothing. I have several locks on my door and as soon as I get home from work, I lock the door every time so I don't forget. I live on a 4th floor so I dont think it would be that easy to climb in.
I used to own pepper spray back when I was living in the US and I had a stalker. I used to carry in my pocket all the time.

Are you referring to the guy who unknowingly shot his son while he was burglarizing the neighbors house?
I have two fairly big dogs (60-70 lb range) that would definitely cause harm to any intruders. I have to be really careful even with having friends over because they are so protective.
I feel safer with my brother living with me now, but I still keep a knife in my nightstand. I am a light sleeper so I assume I would wake to someone breaking in. I also live in a safe complex with a neighborhood watch that have had great success catching the few break ins we have had.
Someday I plan on getting a dog, but as of right now I can't give it the attention it would deserve.

You actually don't need a carry permit if you want a gun just to keep at home.

True enough, and I could open carry without a permit in VA, too. I live in a safe area, though (one time, my roommate and I both left, each thinking the other one was home, and the front door was wide open for several hours, but nothing was stolen), and my main interest is having it with me when I'm out and about, although I'd prefer not to open carry.

I live in a very safe neighborhood and our houses are very close together and we know a good 75% of the families on our block. If someone tried to break in, half my 'hood would be at my house.
That said, my dog would bark at anyone trying to get in so I'd wake up. I sleep with my cell next to my bed. I also have a button on my cell that allows me to turn on every light in my house on instantly (they are all on dimmers tied into our home automation system). There's also a button on the light switch right outside my bedroom door that does the same thing. So I'd turn on all the lights and have a barking dog with neighbors in close proximity. I don't think an intruder would want all that attention and would haul ass out of there
