I have seen several people rave about USAA as a bank- what makes them so great?
We have TD and I hate them. I was very happy with Commerce and have just been growing more and more frustrated with TD so I think we're switching banks.

It just is. It's not a corporation. They distribute profit to the members. You need to be military or family of a current or former service member. The rates are great. We use them for everything... home loan, insurance, travel, jewelry, everything.
What pp said. Also, they refund ATM fees up to a certain amount (can't remember how much $15...$20) so I never feel like I have to search for a specific ATM.

awesome customer service, no ATM Fees, higher DDL than regular banks and better rates. Also when we traveled abroad we use a separate debit card so we have no Int'l transaction fees.

We also have them and LOVE them! The customer service is STELLAR, they have TONS or services and are ALWAYS willing to help. We use them for banking, car insurance, renters, and a jewelery rider for my rings. I cannot say enough great things about them. The only reason we don't have our auto loan through them is because we got 0% through the dealer, and the other vehicle we own outright. They also return other bank ATM fee's up to $15, and don't charge fees for themselves.
I will say we do have another account with WF. The only reason we have that is for depositing cash (no UPS here that does that) and the off chance of a system malfunction. We have only had an issue once where the debit card system was having an issue, but since we don't have CC's, we would have been in BIG trouble without another way to pay for things.
My mom has her homeowners insurance with them and LOVES their service. She's in FL and when hurricanes hit she gets her claim money way before anyone else does.
I priced them for insurance a little while back and they were really high for me! which was a bummer. I like that they'll refund atm fees and I like the idea of being able to deposit checks with a mobile app since DH doesnt have dd and we both hate actually going to the bank. Looks like I will need to open a cc with them to do that though. Which is fine, I'll just have to wait until we make settlement on our house next month before I start making the switch then
i think that the mobile deposit requires that you have either insurance or a USAA credit card, and be eligible for the other product. which basically means military-affiliated with at least one product beyond checking.

Continue to periodically check their rates for insurance because sometimes things change and they may eventually be able to meet or beat your current rates.

USAA is awesome! They are ridiculously easy to work with, go out of their way to make things easy for you (like when we got a fraud alert on our cc literally minutes before leaving the country, they cancelled our card and sent a new one to our hotel in Florence via FedEx) and are just hassle free in general.
When it comes to insurance they have a very low risk tolerance. They are known for being very easy to work with when a claim is filed and also pay claims with no hassle. However, if you file claims too often they will jack up your rates or toss you out to a subsidiary until you return to good standing. My brother found this out the hard way when he filed a couple of auto claims in the same year. But, that's how they offer such great services - they keep the riffraff out!
USAA not able to get coverage through due to the guidelines, but Ally bank we just switched to, been a completely a different experience from our other bank.
