I am using BabyFit which is like Spark of MFP to track all my nutrients and such. I am doing okay so far but it says I should have between 2290 - 2590 calories a day and that just seems like too much because I am overweight.
Every web site says "if you are overweight you should talk to your doctor" but I won't see a regular OB for at least a month. I was planning on printing out my daily tracking sheets and seeing what she says and maybe asking for a referral to a nutritionist but what should I do in the meantime?
I'm overweight flirting with obese according to BMI.
Generally, you need an extra 100 cal in first tri, 200 in second, 300 in third. So if you know about what you usually eat, tack a bit on and you're fine. Really, first tri can be a crapshoot if you get sick anyway.
Mostly, eat good food when you're hungry and drink lots of water.
Don't stress too much about this... Pregnancy isn't really the time to be counting calories to every last mouthful. I'd focus on eating nutrient dense stuff and maintaining your current weight throughout 1st trimester (whatever amount of calories that takes). But don't go walking around hungry-- if you are hungry eat something (healthy ).

I don't really know how many calories I used to eat. I'm trying to eat really good now. No more wine calories. And I'm really trying to avoid using an iron supplement so I'm going to the grocery store in a few to get cream of wheat and sardines.
I wouldn't worry about it right now and I'm overweight almost obese. So far I haven't gained any and haven't really upped my calorie intake (save for a few nights of enjoying an ice cream sandwich .
So far 1st tri has been about survival, not getting sick and just keeping me from not feeling bad.
The rule of thumb that you hear a lot is 200-300 calories but it is not even. You might say burn an extra 150 in first tri or even have less total calories and be fine. During the largest growth streches you might need/crave and extra 500 per day.
Overall I'd trust your body or I'd add 200 calories per day until you see your doctor.
FWIW I didn't do anything special with either pregnancy and I was pretty heavy when I got pregnant my second go around. I didn't gain much weight until about halfway through which is common if you're already well above your ideal weight like I was.

My OB loosley sugggest the Phase 2/3 of South Beach ie - lean meat, fruits, veggies, low fat dairy, brown rice, whole grains etc...I think this early on, you countinue to eat normal/maintain...
I'm not really hungry at all. I've lost 5 pounds since egg retrieval day. All I want is soup. I ordered a new thermos. Oh and milk. I had two things of 2% today, it was so yummy and that took up 250 calories.

This is what I had heard also. I am also overweight (obese probably) and haven't eaten any differently since becoming pregnant and I haven't gained any weight yet. Although, my weight has shifted to other areas of my body recently.
Just yesterday my OB said that pregnant women only need about 300 more calories in their diet...Not helpful to me since I never counted calories. I gained 5lbs first tri since prior to being pregnant I was strictly low carb. Then nothing but carbs sounded good for 8 weeks. I am hoping to be better now.
I tried to add a high protien snack each day into my normal routine. All the books I read said 200-300 calories but when they broke it down it was like an apple and a yogurt. So you dont need ot eat a ton more. Thats what the books said
Now my advice is just listen to your body. I started off underweight. My body told me to eat. During first tri I couldnt stop eating and gained a ton of weight. I think i needed it and just made sure that everything I ate had some sort of good nutritional value. Then in second tri my hunger went down a ton to the point now where I eat like my normal pre-pregnancy self. If your body is telling you french fries ignore it but if you want a good healthy snack than go for it.
Just eat when you are hungry and try to make healthy choices while you can. You never know how you will feel later. I never added calories on purpose, was really sick and lost ten pounds in the first trimester, had GD and was in a strict diet in the third trimester, and still gained 27lbs by the end.
