My son is 2.5 and we are visiting my friend and her 3 year old in DC for a weekend. Friend works all the time and doesn't get out much to see the sites, so I'm looking into things for us to do. Any recommendations for things to see and places to eat?
Check out the blog kid friendly dc to find out what is going on the time you are there. But the zoo and the air and space are always an easy good choice

there is tons of stuff to do! there is a water taxi from alexandria to georgetown that is fun. the outdoor sculpture garden on the Mall is a favorite of my 3 year old- big sculptures plus a huge fountain :-) All the museums on the Mall are kid-friendly. The zoo is nice this time of year.
In Alexandria, we like Facca Luna for pizza, Overwood for brunch or dinner.

Yep, my kids faves are the Smithsonian museums (particularly Natural History, American History, and Air and Space...both the main location on the Mall and the Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly), and the National Zoo. DD #1s Girl Scout troop loved the Building Museum and I hear good things, but we missed that trip because she was sick.
If you're here the weekend of October 27th, the Udvar-Hazy Center is doing it's annual Air and Scare which can get crowded but is pretty fun. My kids love going to the museum in costume, doing some trick or treating and crafts, and seeing some special exhibits (DD #1 had her picture taken with R2D2 one year and still loves seeing that).
I should have mentioned that I'll be there Nov 30 - Dec 2, so I imagine there is some fun holiday stuff going on. My friend mentioned doing ICE! Shrek the Halls.
