I think the colors today are safe, just don't throw a whole bunch of bleach on your head. I did full highlights/lowlights right when I hit 13 weeks. I think that's considered the safest because the color doesn't go directly in your head, but I would feel comfortable going to get a subtle color to cover up greys.
I think these days things are fine. The girl who does my hair has had 2 kids since I started going to her, and as she said, if its okay for her to continue working (which she cleared through her Dr), then its ok to use the products. But I do agree with Sara, don't go dumping bleach on your head.

I have never stopped coloring my hair throughout my pregnancies, as my hairstylist friend insists it is safe, that very little absorbs into the skin. She is a mom too, and she colored her hair when she was pregnant. I went very light blonde when I was pregnant with Maisy, so I know some bleach was involved (my hair is light to begin with), but that wasn't until my 2nd or 3rd trimester. But then I know you aren't looking to go blonde anyways You'll be fine putting color on your roots!
Thanks ladies! I thought I heard that it was ok , but I wanted to make sure I wasn't making that up, lol! I meant to ask my dr on Monday when I saw him but it slipped my mind (shocker....placenta and toddler brain...not a good combo).
