Has anyone been to a combat dining in/out? H's squadron has one coming up soon and I can't decide what to wear. I know the rules (any uniform combo - can be altered, no rank, etc). It probably sounds silly, but I feel weird putting on a uniform when I haven't been AD for over 3 years now. I want to alter some BDUs without drawing attention to myself.
I wore a khaki shirt dress. Most other wives wore flight suit dresses. I detest them on principle, so I did not. But I'm also not prior AD. If I were, I might be more comfortable wearing an actual uniform.

I'm a little confused (as I'm still learning everything!)... what is a flight suit dress? Are all the wives wearing it prior AD? I'm really confused. I thought spouses work cocktail dresses?

The wives made dresses out of their husband's flight suits (or bought them). For combat dining outs, everyone including spouses wear some type of military uniform. There's also an obstacle course, squirt gun fights, etc. It's basically a morale booster for the unit. I've never been to one, but I heard they are fun.
For dining outs, military members wear mess dress and spouses wear cocktail dresses.

oh, okay! Thanks! I had no idea there was a combat dining out in addition to the other dining outs.

piper, I've never heard of a combat dining out, either. Actually the only dining out I've seen was back in college, when H was in ROTC. I was his date senior year, and that's the first and last time I've heard heard mention of it.

Okay, good to know!
I can't imagine trying to create one of these dresses made out of a uniform. Unfortunately, I am lacking in the sewing department. My dress would probably be an embarrassment!

If you really want one, wait until you get to YH's UPT base. There are usually several people offering to make them for a reasonable price, provided you supply the materials (name tape, Velcro, patches, etc...)
